Okay, but what those other countries aren't is America. Having a College All American sevens team is good for American rugby any way you slice it. We haven't been doing it for long. What your complaint is, boiled down, is there should be more pathways for rising talent to be evaluated and developed. I agree. We have a College All American pathway and we need to keep it legitimate so college players will strive to make the team. In my opinion, it's a mistake to let players who didn't qualify by playing college sevens on to the team and leave named College All Americans at home.

I think the problem people have with non college students joining the All American team has nothing to do with the two guys, but with the perception of selection and administration. College clubs and students pay a lot of money to USA Rugby for a somewhat unclear return. Sure there are championships, but select side play is another area that is clearly a return on dues investment for these players. The issue is when the taxman (USA Rugby) comes knocking for more money, they'll say "look at all we do for you" and bring up championships, and select sides etc. So bringing in players for a COLLEGE "all american" team is a bait and switch of sorts. This reminds people of bureaucracy and leaves a sour taste in the mouths of people who go through regular channels. It's okay to have a "youth" or "aspiring players" team made up of college students and age grade player. Just don't piss on our heads and tell us it's raining.

CoachD, I'm aware of what the term College All Americans means. I'm suggesting that what amounts to a U23 developmental team should not exclude players on an arbitrary basis. I'm also aware that you don't need to be in college to play for the U20s but that is part of my point. We develop these players at the HSAA (effectively U18/U19) and the U20 level but all of a sudden when they turn 20 they are no longer part of the age grade development system if they aren't in college. As Rugby lover says, the top countries in the world don't differentiate whether players are in college or not; they just want the best players period in their development teams. Given that we are currently ranked 17th in the world in 15s and finished second to last in 7s among core teams last year, I think we need to make sure we are doing the same.

mholzman: First off, you should think about what the term "College All American" means. Secondly, you don't have to be in high school or college to play for the U-20s, Atlantis, or other high performance teams. We need more opportunities for promising players to play high level competition but playing for the Collegiate All Americans should be reserved for college players.

Great topic and glad everyone has opinions and can voice them. @ mholtzman 1)Young Players ARE developed at many levels. Local & Regional levels to begin with for younger players with Select Side Annual Tournaments and National Select Side and Club/School Tournaments. Then the opportunity of being chosen to be on the USA High School AAs & U20 AAs for trips overseas. 2) College Rugby Players are one of largest, if not the largest, demographic supporting USA Rugby with dues. Having funds coming back to support College Rugby is therefore quite appropriate. 3) Because other collegiate sports only name AAs on paper doesn't mean USA Rugby should. Rugby is usually the most "Varsity Level" college sport on most campuses that does not get Varsity Level Recognition. Collegiate AAs are just one pathway offered to excel at the sport they love, but an important one in my book.

They were in chula vista when the need to find replacements for injured players came up. This sounds like it was a logistical and financial decision. I'm sure the team hadn't budgeted money to bring in replacement players if there were injuries. The kids were in the right place at the right time. I wish them well.

CoachD, USA Rugby did indeed name 36 players as college All Americans as they should. College rugby is an important part of the game in this country and the major American sports all name college All American teams as well. However, they don't have them go out and play games. Again, why should USA Rugby only develop young players who go to college, something that has nothing to do with rugby? Do you agree that the college All Americans are a developmental team? If yes, why should a developmental team cut out players from it because of an arbitrary reason like attending college? And if they aren't a developmental team, then why should USA Rugby fund them?
