Pat, perhaps you should add the disclaimer that you work at a "for-profit" rugby enterprise/business (with deep pockets) that stages an invitational that looks to pass itself off as the "7s Championship" each spring. The new format is not perfect but it is a start; plus it was determined by a Competition Committes of rugby peers and not TV execs.

Jb, Its a money issue for D2 schools, plus most D2 schools dont play 7s to begin with, either not much interest or not enough commitment. Its just a waste of time and money for them given that the competiton isnt getting any easier.

What's the most successful college sporting event? March madness has to win that. Why? Because in the early rounds you get some little schools that upset the blue chip teams, and in the end you usually have the powerhouses going against each other. Why not emulate this? Have four 16 team regions that qualify for a 16 team national championship. Guarantee teams that win conference championships a spot and then have at large spots. In the south where I'm from this would get 3-5 DII and NSCRO teams a punchers chance. The great thing about sevens is it could be a chance to drop all the D1, DII, D1aa, NSCRO labels and just play rugby. Creating a separate event for DII and NSCRO would be a mistake. Give the smaller schools who are doing a good job promoting the sport a chance to play against the big boys.

Rugger2: That's why the D2 teams would have to *qualify* for the tourney. The 85% to which you refer wouldn't make it through the process. And what about the 15%? Are we going to let non-rugby factors determine which collegiate teams gets to play?

USA Rugby in general seams to be moving away from the majority of its membership and only focusing on the top Divisions across the board from Senior, College, and High School. Poor strategy, if they think this will grow rugby in the US. All it will cause is a new governing body to form and fraction the membership.

To create tournaments so they can have something of an infrastructure from which to launch a competition next year. 2. If one year of not being able to have the opportunity to play in the national championship means that D2 teams will simply not play 7s, then it seems like D2 teams must not really care that much about playing 7s. If Principia has such a good 7s team, then presumably they would want to play in their conference 7s tournament and send film to these selectors (whoever they may be-by the women's committee demanding and getting the date changed, that means Alex Magelby will not be at this championship because of the IRB series). The ACRL and SCRC and NCRC conferences had 7s tournaments before there was a USAR national championship. Why? Because they cared about playing 7s. If D2 teams really care, then rather than whine about this decision they will create tournaments so that next year there will be a solid infrastructure in place for a D2 Natl championship.

1. As you point out, USAR collects the same amount of money from all teams. Therefore, if one D2 team is allowed to qualify this year, then all D2 teams who want to have to be given the opportunity. So if Appalachain State wants to try to qualify, USAR has to find them a tournament to compete in. If Central Missouri wants to qualify, USAR needs to find them a tournament to play in. Salve Regina, Pricipia, Fransiscan, etc. Same thing. It is hard enough creating a competition that will accommodate all the D1 teams. Add accommodation of other teams and it becomes even more complicated. So, for this year, the line was drawn at D1. As the author was specifically informed yesterday, the goal is to have a D2 tournament next year. Is it unfair? Sure. But no more unfair than USAR giving D1A teams over $100,000 in travel grants this year. And it is even less unfair when you consider that one of the points of the rule for this year is to push the D2 teams to create tournaments this year, cont
