I thought the fact that we missed two kicks that would have netted five points should not be overlooked. Four new caps is a lot all at once. A good showing and I am looking forward to the game against Georgia and Italy

At the international level if you can't win your own scrums you are doomed. On at least three occasions the US lost ball on their put in from good attacking position. When they did win the ball Clever was forced to pickup while moving backward as if on roller skates. Italy and Georgia could be ugly. No reason not to take chances on attack when a knockon is simply a way to gain the ball back by taking one against the head. I wish I saw this getting better but with all the emphasis in this country now on 7's I look for little improvment in the near future.

2nd and 3rd phase execution is absolutely coachable in my opinion. It's different in that the decisions become broader, and depend more on the individual athlete's ability and experience. There are more variables, but it is absolutely coachable.

I think he was referring to not dropping the dang ball... which really is more mental. Also, could be talking about the rucks, but I doubt that because honestly I thought we did pretty damn fine job of bangin and rucking. (At the very end of the match I would have liked to seen more risk taking considering Canada brought in all there players into a defensive line - hindsight 2020 and Im a bit of an arm chair (scrumhalf?))

@noladirt - I can understand why your concern, but I think Tolkin was talking about spilling the ball after the line break - not getting multiple phases after a line break. Decision making with an eye towards maintaining possession can be coached, but I think Tolkin meant practice only gets you so far, and test rugby is its own environment.

Interesting comment from Tolkin regarding linebreaks. I'm a big Mike Tolkin fan, but Im not sure I agree with him on the point that executing in the 2nd level after a line break is an uncoachable skill. Or did I misinterpret this comment? Interested to hear the opinions of some other coaches on this.

Inconsistent? Yes. However it is so obvious a function of lack of playing time together..which is THE constant problem with the Eagles... Aside from the tackling problems in the first half, again the same problem cited above, it was a solid game with lots of heart. Was wondering if USAR could get Clever's "Magic Johnson" pass on youtube?...unbelievable...
