Admission v Academic says:

Admissions standards is a big thing, but academic standards is not a misnomer for this discussion. The academic workload and difficulty of the academic work varies significantly from Life to Dartmouth, from Davenport to Duke. Not only are Life and Davenport easier to get into, once there the players have the advantages of being able to more easily balance their schoolwork and rugby. First, because the schoolwork is easier, and second, because they get school support in things like registering for classes so as not to conflict with practice times, being able to miss classes to travel to away games, and in some cases they have tutors. So while I agree that the big thing is these rugby academys being able to get whatever players they want into school, that is not the only consideration.

First point, "if BYU weren't winning then no one would be complaining." I guess, but they aren't. Their only close games before Life in the QF's were Old Puget and the Denver Barbos. They beat both of them. Second, "clubs becoming varsity is the most important thing." Really, should we just ask, or is there a form to fill out ? I'll ask the coach of Cal lacrosse. Three, admission standards are different for varsity athletes as compared to ordinary students. It's a fact. Schools maintain lower admission standards for varsity athletes so they can have good teams, not smart ones. Look it up. Another concern that I don't even know is true, but have heard mentioned is, what if a BYU rugby player takes a year off for a mission to one of the rugby nations, for instance would they play there ? Not that I think a year of seasoning in NZ would help anyone, but it might seem advantageous to those who don't have that chance.
