The LAST thing, and I mean LAST thing that we want to do with rugby in this country is take on anything the NCAA is doing. The NCAA is probably the most corrupt organization in the world of sports. They, like USA Rugby have no real jurisdiction over any thing they supposedly govern, but they put on the championships, so they have control. I will puke the next time someone suggests aligning rugby under a set of NCAA rules. Before you know it rugby will be ruined if that happens. Read this article if you lack belief. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/10/the-shame-of-college-sports/8643/

Former Missionary says:

We played rugby on my mission in France... Once... 3-on-3... For about 30 minutes, half of which was spent trying to re-explain the rules to five of the six guys playing. The idea that BYU is sending kids out on missions to play rugby is laughable. Google Will Hopoate sometime. I have a question for the crowd who thinks having older players is an advantage: Why don't all teams do it? The leaves-of-absence allowances are not specific to LDS missions or the military. They apply to Peace Corps, Methodist missions, etc. So, if having players that are so old is an advantage, why don't other schools send their players out on a volunteer assignment to help them develop? The answer is simple: Taking time off school is not an advantage.

Interesting conversations and comments here. Whereas I don't know the true motivations/motivators for the eligibility rules changes (nor have I yet reviewed the changes themselves), nevertheless I would like to clarify one point: While the changes will obviously affect several individual players' cases, nevertheless the current state of dominance by elite college teams will remain unchanged. I hope that these changes were not specifically created to target and bring down BYU ... because, first off, they will fail miserably to do so; and second, they will only hurt more individual players across the collective. BYU will always attract a strong national and international contingent of student-athletes, because the LDS Church (BYU's owner) is a national/international presence. Slice and dice rules however you want, this fact will never change.

@collegerugbyfa n Liked a lot of what you shared, except the part (with respect to Rugby) about there being some advantage to or experience gained by serving an LDS mission. It just isn't true, plain and simple. The only stories I've ever even heard of LDS missionaries playing rugby have only to do with a few former players of Polynesian descent playing Touch Rugby with their missionary companions once a week (on their preparation day). That's probably less training and experience than a child gains in a Rookie Rugby program. Personally, I served a mission in the desert on the border of the US and Mexico. None of my associates hardly even knew what Rugby was. Outside of playing some soccer and basketball or finding the rare opportunity to run or lift weights, there was little chance for physical advancement, let alone maintenance. I was fit when I left but came home 25 pounds skinnier ... Sorry, no advantage gained.

@collegerugbyfa n That is very false about LDS missionaries going on missions and playing higher standard of rugby and coming back beasts. They have to follow a set of guidelines while on missions, they arent allowed to play rugby or watch TV or play video games of any sort. They are only allowed to work out for 30 mins daily. They commit when they go on a mission to serve Jesus Christ for 2 years. I have a nephew on a mission right now that plans on attending Arkansas State when he finishes his mission in October. He left Hawaii at 235 and because of the restrictions on weight lifting and areas he has served, he has put on weight. This eligibility rule makes it HARDER for missionaries because they generally havent played for 2 years.

No wonder sponsorships like the US Army and National Guard went to the wayside. I truly hope College Rugby teams do 'break away' from USARugby...They need to get their heads out of arses. We are on the verge on something good here, and I always feel like big brother USARugby screws it up. Well played fellas. Well played.

USA Rugby stepping on it yet again. Eligibility rules in place ready to be adopted see NCAA Athletics. When you start school you start using eligibility. not when you graduate high school. some said it earlier, because you had to work our go to the military to afford to go to school you are penalized. Nigel the elitist been hold beck USA rugby fro years..

One other point. Many of you out there say that College Rugby should be played by "College aged kids". What age is this?? The last time I checked we live in America and to shut someone off from playing college rugby becuase they went and fought for our freedoms, practiced a religion they believe in or had to work in order to have money and go to college is frankly unAmerican. A scoiety that puts its efforts in bring down those at the top is doomed to fail because once those at the top have fallen and in this case, we would have thrown rugby back to the 1970's when keggers and drunks frequented rugby fields and the gameplay on the field was poor. BYU vs Ark St was the kind of national championship all fans want to see. I know it had been Cal vs BYU for five previous years. But that is great rugby to watch. I am a head coach and it is my hope to be at the level of Cal, BYU and Life in the future, not for them to be at mine.
