The worst part of the invitational format was that they selected the teams before they even played this season. I realize that most schools are focusing on state championships, so they can be more like other high school sports AND save money, but Xavier was either having a down year or the competition in the Northeast really improved (or both). I know Greenwich (my alma mater) beat them for the first time since 1999 and proceeded to go undefeated and win states. It's a shame that THIS was the year they decided to change the format. GHS deserves some recognition after all the strong years put together since we started the club in 1986. USA may have to go to the "ranking" system other high school sports use to recognize a National #1. The "invitational" is not indicative of all the good rugby across the country.

It is pretty sad that someone like bob2134 is trying to find excuses for why other teams are unable to beat the U-19 teams in Utah. I'm sure every year they are consistently tricking USA rugby. Trybe was beat in the first round so that must mean they didn't cheat this year, right? You should also know more about a state when you talk about it. Utah has a very large population of Polynesian families. Spend more energy helping the teams around you get better and less energy making excused for them.

I have been out of the loop. Any references as to why they decided to do an Invitational as opposed to a Championship.

An exhibition showcasing the rugby readiness of competitive teams from different regions is good for USA rugby; however for journalist accuracy the headline should read "HS Invitational Champs to be crowned Saturday"

There is a big difference between winning an invitational tournament and a team playing its way into and winning a national championship. Sadly, we'll have no USA Rugby High School or U-19 National Champions this year.
