Completely disagree with you, Tom.. If USA Rugby wanted to make a true nationals work, they could. They choose not to. There is no reason that nationals should have to disrupt or hinder the progress of the SBROs, but as you said it is not important enough to them to do it. The reason that other sports do not do nationals is because every school plays them. Rugby is in the minority, it is offered at far less than 50% of schools, so the logistics are simply not that hard. Have regional qualifying, or if you want to stick with the invitational model, fine, invite LATER in the year when teams have had a chance to show their worth. USA Rugby only says that Nationals would hinder SBROs because it is an excuse for what they consider to be too much of an inconvenience.

my feelings are that why is greenwich not in the nationals? i think the whole choosing who gets to be in it is ridicoulas. greenwich along with a few other teams are beating the teams that are invited. nationals should be for the best not an invite only. GREENWICH TO NATIONALS!!!

To wormscoach: The only organization capable of organizing a real national championship tournament is USA Rugby. If it's not interested/willing, I don't see how it's going to happen. I think USA Rugby is right to choose the SBRO model as the way to foster rugby's growth at the high school level. CAN we do both: integrate state championships with the old National Championship model? Xavier fields 2 varsity teams: one aims for the Nationals. The other aims for the New York state championship. Most schools can't do that. Can we have Nationals following the state championships? Some state championships are already over. New York's tournament is not until May 27-28. What about the old obstacles: money, exams, school/district regs, graduation? Can't have 50 state champions showing up at the tournament. How do you set up playoffs? No other sport at the high school level has a national championship. There's probably a good reason for that.

I think everyone who was invited to Nationals would have prefered to play into the Nationals. The only people in favor of the current system are those who believe there should be NO Nationals at all because ithey argue that it distracts from the SBROs. I do not buy that argument.

Fair point, Mike. USA Rugby should probably rename this event the National High School Invitational Championship or even leave "Championship" out-- like college basketball's National Invitational Tournament. (Sadly, I'm just old enough to remember when the NIT was the prestige tournament and the NCAAs were for everyone else.) We should also not forget that the National High School Championship's old format was also flawed. There were deserving teams who did not compete because they could not afford the expense, had exams or graduation, were blocked by school/district rules, etc. And there were champions from less-developed rugby regions who, frankly, were out of their depth and would have gotten nowhere near the Nationals had they been located anywhere else. One last observation on Xavier-Greenwich: this was a regular-season game. Under the old system, Greenwich would still have had to have beat Xavier in the Northeasterns-- something they have never done.

Im in agreement plus seniors, who are a big part of the team, graduate at the end of the year so to base an invitation off their success is illogical. Herriman and Greenwich should be competing for the national title they are two of the best teams in the nation.

Tom, I understand your point, but they should not represent it as a national championship then, which is what they are doing. Can't have it both ways. If it is truly a national championship, let the best prove that they are worthy that year. If it is an invitational showcase based on past merit, then do not call it the 2012 national championship. It can't be both.
