I was very suprised that a team coming to a national championship was very much out of shape. They might have had a good team in the fall but I guess the coaching staff failed to maintain their cardio level. Seemed after the first 10 min of the game they were tired and a speedy Vassar team just rolled passed them.

RNE is a very organized & autonomous org, far more organized than NERFU/NRU. From our championship events to our website to our All-Conf teams to our publicity via social media to connections we've made w/ our school's Admins, we've far surpassed anything NERFU/NRU has ever done for any of the teams/players in our conf. Our membership is strong at 19. We have Bentley on the men's side who has qualified for numerous Nat'l Playoffs, & Stonehill & Prov on the women's side who have done the same. The fact is AIC was a very tough team in the Fall. Since that time they appear to have taken a step back. They played just 2 games on 1 day all spring to prepare, which I suspect is b/c of injuries/academic troubles/low #'s. You'd have to ask them tho. How anyone can suggest that RNE, or any conf should have to play into a Nat'l Playoff when Rutgers didn't even show up is ridiculous. My vote is for a Fall Nat'l Playoff.

You need to realize that this is not about AIC personally, but instead about the integrity of the tournament selection process as a whole. Of course there are going to be some lopsided victories in the tournament, its the nature of the good teams versus the truly great teams. This seems to be an argument for a more legitimate and lengthy regional selection process that will allow for a more competitive National tournament. Nobody wants to see 5+ matches of 40 points or more, nevermind a 100+ point blowout, at the NATIONAL TOP 16 level. Maybe there aren't 16+ teams on a level of some of the top 5 teams, but this seems to be an argument to at least make an attempt to get the best teams instead of granting automatic bids to conferences thrown together in a year. AIC was a good team anyway. They gave Vassar their closest game of the spring.

Vassar did recently drop from D1 to D2, but with such a small student body, I'm not really opposed to that move. Washington State and Temple, however, have over 20K students, and should be capable of playing in D1.

This is all just Tony Brown's spin machine. He doesn't like Rugby Northeast for some reason. I used to have respect for him. Not anymore. And good point about Vassar being formerly in D1. What happened?

The idea that AIC didn't belong is absurd. By my count, there were five matches that had margins of victory of over 40 points or more (plus a forfeit), including a 103 point victory by Washington State. No one is saying that those teams didn't deserve a chance to play.

Bowdoin said they couldn't safely complete because they a total of 8 starters who graduated and are studying abroad this semester. Their line-up would have been filled with brand new and inexperienced players and if they played against Norwich, it WOULD have been dangerous. It was a safe call on Mary Beths part, I know I wouldn't want my team in that situation. In the Northeast, most teams don't have a competitive season. It's hard to get a team that is ready and willing to play against the #1 seed in the tournament when they haven't been practicing and they're not prepared. But this goes into the whole fall/spring season argument, that's for another time.....

"A better qualification process is needed to make sure the best teams in the region are represented at nationals." Are you kidding me? This is the same region where FOUR teams (Rutgers, Bowdoin, Mary Washington, and Stony Brook) were offered invites to the playoffs and couldn't attend, right? That includes a Bowdoin team that had to decline because they couldn't "safely compete." Ok, AIC lost by alot. But at least they SHOWED UP TO PLAY. Whereas the varsity rugby program at Bowdoin, who presumably you would lump into the category of "better teams in the region" couldn't safely compete. Give me a break. The byline on this article may say "Jackie Finlan," but it might as well have been written by Tony Brown, since it seems to be a subtle jab at RNE, who Coach Brown has constantly been saying did not deserve a bid to the national playoffs. I guess based on the 44-0 BYU win over Northern Iowa, D1 needs a better qualification process too.
