100% great idea. There is no argument otherwise. Gives experienced players something competitive to do while it frees up non-sevens players and coaches 6-8 weeks to get new players up to speed on how to play the game. When everyone comes together in mid October for fifteens experienced players are in shape and don't have to sit through basic drills, and new players have gotten the attention they need to learn the game.

7s is a great way to introduce crossover athletes to the sport. Those players who are not suited for 7s spend most of the fall in the weight room preparing for the competitive 15s season but also participate in skills practices. This past fall at Wake Forest we played a month and a half of 7s and then a month of exhibition 15s. Next fall we'll play 2 months of sevens and then maybe one or two exhibition 15s games. Playing 15s for the entire fall and entire spring is a lot of commitment for true non-scholarship student-athletes and having a 7s season where the kids aren't playing every weekend has helped to prevent burnout and attrition. And many of my players view 7s as the preferred form of rugby at this point. That's the version they see on NBC

I don't think most college players would really want to play for men's clubs, and it's not as big of a challenge as you think. Our club played both 7s and 15s last semester, and it actually works out pretty well. 7's helps develop skills like passing and open field tackling, and gives players a base to build on for 15s in the spring.

Andy and Pat, thanks for the details. I'm sure it will be a challenge having separate squads. Could be a bonus for local clubs if players want to play competitive 15's.

Yes, exhibition 15s will still be played in the fall just as in past years. Some schools will play more than others. The ACRL 15s season will remain in the spring, as it always has been. And USAR had no input in this decision.

Why would they want to do that, go on play 15s? Isn't 7 games of 15s in the Spring enough? Haven't you heard? Sevens is the way of the future because of the Olympics.

USAR had no input - this was independent decision made by the teams within the ACRL. The decision to play 15's as well as 7's is down to individual teams. My team will be playing 15's as well as running a separate 7's team in the fall.

Was this an independent decision, or did USA Rugby have any input? Will any 15's be played in the fall? If not, are players who do not wish to play 7's free to transfer to a 15's playing club? If players wish to continue playing 15's for their college, are they free to create their own schedule and represent the school?
