[quote name="Anon"]If/when they prove they're 'rebuilt,' then and only then should they be allowed to play up. quote] That's reasonable, though I would say that programs with strong histories are good DIA teams even if they're struggling now because an established administrative structure and culture makes them likely to be able to return to strength. You also know teams like Wyoming and CSU aren't likely to scratch a road fixture on short notice, etc. That was probably my poorly-expressed underlying point: teams that have been good over time are long-term prospects for stability as DIA participants, unlike flash-in-the-pan teams that come and go depending on player culture, casual coaches, etc. Your mention of ASU and Life, two well-organized teams with good culture, suggests we agree more than disagree; I just think there's more to stability than one or two crops of players.

Fine, I take back Wyoming - though from what I've seen of them in my time living in Colorado (the past 4 years), they've been terrible. I think there are some D1-AA B teams that could beat them right now. They had no business being invited into the CPD/D1-A based on what they had done 3-4 years earlier. If/when they prove they're 'rebuilt,' then and only then should they be allowed to play up. And just because Eastern Rockies has been historically good, it doesn't mean that CSU belongs (or Wyoming in its current state). The South is very 'meh,' but nobody would say Arkansas State and Life don't belong because of that.

Two of those "never been very good" teams are from one of the historically best LAUs in college rugby, the Eastern Rockies RFU. Before the CPD/DIA, it included the AFA, Colorado, Colorado State, & Wyoming. Wyoming has been to the national big four 3 times & was in the national tournament 7 of 9 years from 1999-2007. They were at the bottom of the CPD last year, but a few bad years at the highest level of US college rugby isn't "never been very good." Colorado State has been to the Division I national tournament once, more than most rugby teams in the country. Anon's comment is a classic example of the bad logic that some team or conference is better than the CPD just because some CPD teams are rebuilding. Play in conferences if you prefer, but don't deny that DIA is the toughest competition.

its great to see all these teams come out and not only play against great competition but to promote the game of rugby. Whether they loose by 40 or not they experience traveling with their team which is always fun as well as make a great tournament well known around the US

It sucks to travel that far and get it handed to you- no doubt- but 7s is the wave of the future, and the teams that aren't at the highest level got to see where they want to be firsthand.
Claremont is a smashmouth 10 man rugby team. They recruit players from the 2 D3 football teams on their campus...or campuses...which gets them some good athletes. The only reason they were in the CPD (D1-A) is because their coach lobbied hard to get them a spot based on them winning the D2 championship. The result was a lot of serious blow outs.
