Who's playing this week? When Swiryn, Wyles, Jone, Guppy and Emerick were on the team Al's system looked just fine. Gotta select guys who can handle the ball under pressure; can beat one or two defenders under pressure...Al has beaten Fiji, Canada and Argentina before. I agree with other posters speed times don't create defenders, ball handlers or Rugby Players...need to select the best play makers; guys who want the ball in the crunch. No one seemed to want it against Scotland, man up, with time running out...that's the opposite of what American sports are all about...

At New York City's Xavier High School, most of the rugby team plays football in the fall. A few play soccer. Spring is for 15s. When are our kids supposed to play 7s? In the summer? If so, the competition would probably have to be club- rather than school-based. Let's keep our eye on the ball, people. 15s has got to be our priority. Americans are an impatient people, and sometimes I think that many of us get caught up in 7s because we think that this will be our quickest route to international respectability. Don't get me wrong-- sevens is an exciting sport. But it ain't rugby.

Why are some contracted players not shoe-ins for the squad? We should have the best players contracted and put the best product out there. Screw this developing players for the Olympics crap. We've been developing players forever and it hasn't worked out. Give Hawkins a contract and boot some scrub out. Play the best seven!!!!!

1st he blames the fact that they are not full time than he comes up with another excuse now he is throwing his players under the bus! Clearly Al does not have what it takes to inspire his team to greatness which is half the job for a coach. You can see how much this players love their country and how much they want to win, now we just need someone to point them in the right direction. Al has done a great job but now its time to move on! Thats just the way things work!

Agree... Only problem is limited resources and the need/desire to win now. Kurt Weaver and the Rookie Rugby program are doing a phenomenal job in my opinion. Unfortunately, Rugby in the United States doesn't have the long term desirability of football and other sports in this country. I'm sure Rookie rugby is going to touch some kids with amazing athletic potential, but if there isn't an opportunity to support yourself professionally in the long term, they are going to apply their talents to other sports.

I think the issue is on both ends. You can't have a coach who can't coach his own players and you cant have players who aren't willing to play hard for the coach they have. It isn't always about having the BEST players in every situation. You have to find the mix and for a coach to adapt to their players and players doing the same for the coach. Clearly Al has had awhile to work with the players that he has chosen and things are still not working out.

When is USA Rugby going to start holding coaches accountable for performance? Caravelli obsesses on statistics and fitness, and the boys have yet to learn how to play. This is not a game centered coach - he is an Analysis and an S&C guy. Not good enough.

When you compare Team USA's talent to the top tier teams in the 7's circuit, here in lies the problem. USA 7's needs to focus on the development of young HS talent. There are probably a million Cecil Afrika's in this country. When is USA 7's going to make an effort in identifying the dynamic players we know we have in the country in order for this team to truly be successful?

Who would win in a head-to-head match-up? The current USA Sevens team OR a college all-star team with Thretton Palamo, John Bademosi, Nate Ebner, Don Pati, Gareth Jones and take Blain Scully & Peter Tiberio back, while being coached by Magleby. I'd take the college all-star team and give you 21 points.
