Very few teams this weekend actually played a "pure" 7s game (defense moving same direction at the same time, sweeper always in position directing defense, Offense moving backwards to reform on attack, etc). In fact, one pool play game looked very much like two groups of forwards running a pick and run drill for 15 minutes. But, CWU ran some well-drilled deviation and misdirection plays both days. ArkSt's defense anticipated opposing play consistently to steal and counter. K-town's defense practiced some consistent containment. Life would swing wide a few times early, then hit with deviations once the opposing defense spread too fast in anticipation. Great stuff!

It is probably just me, but didn't at least 3 of the 4 semi-finalist mens teams playing yesterday afternoon look a whole lot quicker, and more highly skilled in 7's, than most any other "marquis" team playing in Philadelphia in June? Perhaps to the exclusion of Cal and Utah!...and yes, I know one of those three (CWU) played in Philly! Maybe the game is just plain faster in person, than on NBC TV.....Hope their execs were "tuning" in last night.

OT rugby makes very good points. It's time for us to look ourselves in the mirror and say that US rugby leadership is an embarrassment. You have one tournament that's a slick TV production featuring many teams that have no business being there, and another that tried to do it right with selection, but scheduled at a terrible time, and looked like it was put on by the kids who run the lemonade stand. How do we expect the average American to take our sport seriously when we present them with these inferior representations of our great sport? The kids who played gutty, dramatic, magnificent rugby this weekend deserved better.

Well, At least the tournament made it thru the weekend. I watched several games on Ustream, but quit after a while, it was just too painful. My kid has better camera skills than what I saw. I've seen little league tournaments run better. Were they even playing on full fields? The big question: What did this tournament do for the state of collegiate rugby this weekend?
