this isn't the real national championship. 15s is still the biggest part of US rugby. given that 7s is now the "thing", it still doesn't amount to what it means to play in the world cup in 15s. so many people can/have played on the 7 series whereas 15s is still the main portion of rugby if anyone ever wants to play professionally. you can't get a contract over seas with a 7s cap (even though it wouldn't hurt), the 15s cap is what really counts... on the other hand, good luck to all teams. I'm picking St. Mary's to take it all.

There is only one national championship, and this is it. The other event is a made for TV invitational- good theater perhaps, good competition perhaps, but not the national championship. The teams that elected not to attend denied themselves the opportunity to play for a national championship, unlike those denied the TV event because their football and basketball teams aren't well enough known. I applaud the young men who have worked so hard and sacrificed to compete for their schools and themselves in Texas, and this Saturday I'll salute one team as the collegiate rugby 7s national champions. Congratulations and good luck to all of them.

While Navy' strength has always been 15's, in the 2010 CRC they made it through pool pay and then lost to eventual champion Utah in the cup quarters. In 2011, after a disappointing showing against a good NC side, Navy lost to semi-finalist Central Washington 14-7 and finalist Army 19-15. Then Beat Oklahoma 19-0 and lost to ND in the bowl semi 12-10. This Fall, they won the Eastern Regional Qualifier outscoring opponents 147-20, including beating a very good Stony Brook team 43-10 in the final - SB beat the varsity team at AIC in pool play. It is too bad that finals for the Navy and for Army did not permit the trip to the nationals but these young men are at at school to prepare for war and protect us. Academics won out in the conflict of dates. Looking forward to seeing Army and Navy play at the 2012 CRC and to seeing a great national championship tournament in College Station.

You have to pay to play in any sport. Those that are paying are playing and one will be crowned the initial 7's Collegiate National Champions. Just because a quality team did not accept doesn't mean the rest of the teams should be slighted. All were given an equal opportunity. Go Zoomies, we know you don't get much outside respect.

The teams that are going have to deal with the same issues that the teams who declined invites do. This is finals week for most schools across the nation, and for any of these young men to balance both finals and the national championship is an accomplishment in itself. Some chose to take on the challenge, and some didn't, there is no tarnish for whomever wins.

Understand your point of view.....as reported previously, last year 4 of the top 6 college 15's teams were not in Philly! "Weren't invited", I understand..."not enough marquis value"! That frustration aside, there STILL are a few college rugby 7's teams heading to Texas this weekend, that qualify to be in that top tier of College 7's. We'll see where the inaugural 7's trophy lands. Then one of the(non-participating, but supposed "better teams") can come win it away from them, fair and square!

More Rugby is good for everyone. This is more rugby and in my book good for all of us. No need to go further than that. Good luck to all the teams that made that made the effort to attend. And I also understand why many teams elected not to attend.
