@ NE7s...understand your points but both Kelm & Tiberio DID play Club 7s; Kelm @ Belmont Shore & Tiberio @ Chicago Lions (I think). @ Clay...we have the athletes. Just not enough Rugby Fit at the international level. Having Contracts & a Home in San Diego at the OTC is a start though.

@jdlester: The problem very well could be that Tiberio and Kelm aren't all that different from kids playing at the tournaments at the collegiate level. Personally I believe that if wasn't for availability and injury issues, the two of them wouldn't have been selected at all. I know that's harsh and I like both of these kids but to a degree there's some truth to that. I understand your desire to switch it up and see if see if picking the team differently would work. My concern is that we won some games on Day 2 in Dubai and looked a little better. Do you want to lose those games too? Believe it or not, this team could get a lot worse.

As a neutral (Kiwi) voice, I`d say from what I`ve seen the defense is far too slack and soft. Everything starts from the D. You get that sorted first and go from there. When the Eagle 7s had a good run about 3 seasons ago they were playing half decent defense but the last couple of seasons they`ve just dropped off tackles far too easily. They mental application to making and completing the tackle aint there. Also their forwards are slow and undynamic by WSS standards. Caravelli had this team going forward 3 years ago but hasn`t been able to keep the momentum. He`s been around long enough that results have to be expected. excuses like I`ve seen in the last season or so from him just don`t wash. If I was the USARFU exec I`d be saying results or the door at the end of this season. As a neutral wanting the US etc to climb up the rankings it`s very disappointing to see them actually regressing.

99% of college rugby players dont have the ability to step into international rugby from their experience playing college rugby..... its common sense, if a large majority of the college players have played less than a few years than how is that good competition

In response to NE 7's, how are Tiberio and Kelm any different from these kids playing at the tournaments at the collegiate level? What gave them the special powers to go directly to the National Team? If our teams not winning why not try something else, how could it hurt us?

@Brandon Kraven: the biggest issue with going to the California 7's tournament and thinking these kids are ready to be selected is that these kids aren't playing good competition. They'd be better served playing club 7's or on touring sides like Atlantis and the Tigers. The point I'm trying to make is that these college kids, while some are decent enough athletes, can't play 7's at all. The brand of 7's is pretty atrocious at the collegiate level simply because they haven't played enough of it. So when the average rugby guy, and this is that way across America, goes to a club game or a tournament like this and sees a guy run over everyone they think he could be the next Lomu. At the next level when everyone is just as athletic that simply wouldn't happen. Sure, there could have possibly been 1 or 2 guys at that tournament who have any sort of chance to make the 7's team but even that might be a stretch.
