I'm not sure if 'the calendar is full' is a legitimate excuse not to attend or arrange a warm up tournament. The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be in Scotland and Canada will be there for 7's. USA needs to shift thinking into a 2 year model, stop thinking about Olympics, start thinking "How to win '13/14 World Series?" Success in the short term will translate to a more competitive team, which will translate to a team that is expected to do well at tournaments. Also, while residency will help, what would be better is a genuine High Performence training facility, or regular HP Camps. Residency allows 30 or so athletes the time to train full time, HP camps show them how many people are trying to show that they are better for the position and keep them on their toes. HP camps would also expose more players to National team coaches, giving them a better chance of selection and expanding the USA's player pool.

Disco Dan...IRB rules don't direct inner-union politics. I'd be very surprised if Caravelli will be willing to release "his" 7's players. I know Paul Treu in South Africa has his guys contracted exclusively for 7's during the 7's circuit. They aren't involved in anything else until the circuit is done. Should be interesting to see how that affects guys like Suniula, et al. who be crossing over during the last few years.

Valhalla, I think IRB rules state you have to release players for national team duty for World Cup related events (7s or 15s). Difference is when we're playing England Saxons, if there's an IRB 7s event at the same time I assume 7s comes first. Mycroft, I doubt anyone is guaranteed support through the Olympics (I'd do a Sept-End of IRB Season so player could go home for National 7s). I think SoCal is now the hub of Eagle7s. If you want to be one of the 15 you probably need to head on down to make yourself available. Get a job nearby if you're dedicating you life to trying to make the team. Rules allow you to keep playing for your home team in National competitions but clearly when they call people together for each event it more than just the paid/sponsored residents. Eagles can scrimmage OMBAC, Belmont Shore or anyone who's willing to make the trip.

I imagine players will cycle through. If they are smart, they will contract players year to year. This keeps players hungry to compete. It also mean they will be able to gain immediate advantage of consistant training, but not locked into deals with guys that won't be around in 2016.

This sounds like a great idea but i have some reservations. Will these 15 guys be those that are identified as Olympics team probables or will they be guys that are on the curcuit now and will likely be out of the picture in 2016. Also will these be yearly contracts and so someone moves from say Chicago (who pays for the3 move) works there for a year or less then doesn't get renewed on contract so is now away from home with no job so then what move back to Chicago work hard and the next year gets picked back up on contract. Think this isn't going to happen, just look at the number of guys we use over the course of the 7's curcuit...

All due respect, but the guys with families to feed should probably find something more productive to do with their time. The "family obligations" line is so overstated. Most of the 7s pool are bachelors or recently married. Talking about their families makes it sounds like they have 3 kids at home. If they do, playing national team level rugby without a solid pro contract is irresponsible, unless their day job is huge.

To put this into perspective only the top 4-5 countries have their 7's teams training regularly together and in a HP environment like this. Not even Samoa and Fiji have this set up...they have a semblance of this, but no real full time residency program. Credit Paul Treu of South Africa for innovating this method...Tietjens and others were soon to replicate. Now the USA is able to do the same: bring in a core team of players, train daily, develop, build chemistry...this is huge with regards to rugby in the USA. I would be surprised if we don't win a circuit stop by end of the '13 season. The big question is for the new 15's coach, will these 7's guys be off limits? I would assume Caravelli will put up a decent fight on this point.
