I'll give you another bet - How about Utah unceremoniously knocking out Cal in both of the last two years - when Cal was supposed to win it in 2010 and in 2011 show it was just a fluke that the got booted by Utah the previous year. Even money bet that's why Utah had to play for it while Cal walked in.

It makes no sense to me that one of 3 teams that have been dominating collegiate rugby sevens for the last 3yrs was not invited, Univ. of Utah Rugby. What's going on? Sounds like the invitations are completely arbitrary. This is sad for rugby in our country as we strive to improve structure, awareness and the game overall. 2010 Champions 2011 Finalists 2012 NOT INVITED. Life earned their spot and will probably win the whole thing. Quote me on it.

#67 Bdub 2011-11-08 07:25 Let's see how far that gets you. Bdub, I don't know where you're getting your info from, but Kutztown sevens has proved (in as many tournaments as they can, because they consider a lack of invitations a slight)that there is no way they would be "smoked" by any team invited to this event. I'm not saying that they would win every game, but their brand of athletic rugby (also well established) would prove far better to watch than a "big school" with players that frankly aren't up to par on that point. And on the point of Kutztown not having done anything in the past five years. Well that's just blind ignorance.

After reading all of these posts, I'm looking forward to seeing how the USA Rugby Collegiate 7s Championship turns out. The numbers of spectators and the competition in that tournament will give us something to compare to the CRC.

Kutztown has a student body of roughly 12,000 students who are mostly from the Philadelphia area. They have a solid alumni base in the area and KU Rugby alumni can be found on almost any men's club team in the EPRU. They may not be as big as Temple or PSU, but they will put butts in the seats. If the CRC really wants a quality product invite the little guys, and watch them take on the big schools.

Let's see how far that gets you. Well, so far it has gottent he renewal of college rugby 7's to where for the 3rd year we can watch matches on cable tv. Progressing from only on Universal to actually making it to NBC last year. I have no doubts in my mind, that the CRC actually helped televise the USA matches on NBC and the replay of the final from the RWC. You put Kutztown on tv and after they are smoked, people are gonna wonder wtf they are on their for. I don't care how good you think the small fish are. They don't sell. Plus it is an invitational, and if I am setting this tournament up, I'd be maximizing my audience. Temple and Delaware are bigger, local schools and draw crowds to fill the stands so people will physically be there. In part, the others are there to put tv sets on the tournament. Regardless of your arguments for smaller schools, they would draw nothing in tv audiences. Kutztown, even local couldn't do either.

bdub its funny how your bashing on someone that merely is speaking his mind like you. Kutztown made it to the elite 8 in 2008. Went undefeated in the first season of the MARFU premier league. Has had a winning record each year in league play which brings them back to playoffs for contention into the National Championship year in and year out. Had an all-American/USA eagles 7's player graduate (Marco Barnard). Currently has an all-American sevens player and also honorable mention 7's players(Tim Acker). I can keep on going.... They just ran over every team in the qualifying matches the other weekend which included Temple and Delaware. I understand this event is to publicize the sport and I am all for that. It is ashame though that they left Kutztown out of the competition when the school is only an hour away from the event and the area is filled with Kutztown alumni. BTW every year a new great class comes in to that school to play rugby.

It's nice to see someone with a serious pedigree chiming in on this issue. Good on ya, Battle. I wish you'd chimed in on the PC on CRC forum as well. A couple of folks seem to think it is more important for rugby venues to make money than produce quality.
