My beef is why the Competitions SubCommittee takes so long to make seeding and format decisions. They should be looking at this type of thing immediately following the competition, rather than in 2-3 months prior to the competition when people are already chomping at the bit. These types of things could easily be decided and changes announced within 2-3 months AFTER the prior year's competition. What we have now is that lack of planning on THEIR part constitutes an emergency on OURS.

"Sue Sylvester" - what Brooke said. The Austin weekend was always listed as being Oct. 29-30 on the USA Rugby website. And as others have said, the only way our team and others in our region were "made aware of the shift to the 8 team playoff format" was through media sources, i.e. RugbyMag and YSC. Playoff matches have ALWAYS been both days for all teams, except for the 1st day bye situation last year. It doesn't make sense to assume differently without at least checking. I bought my ticket for Austin in early August (on Southwest, no change fees - natch). I made sure I was flying in on Friday and out late enough on Sunday to fit in any reasonable match time. As a team officer, I also took (literally) 5 minutes and called USA Rugby to confirm the dates before telling my team to buy their tickets for playoffs. Yes, USA Rugby should be more upfront with info - but administrators also need to double check things before committing team money.

Just found out (again through YSC) that there will be no match for 3rd and 4th in Virginia Beach, which means no match for 3rd and 4th at all. Is this really how to run a championship? Could it be possible for USAR to declare any louder how little value the ladies are to them? Lets not pretend that the ladies are a huge commercial product, but they pay dues and they are getting the shaft. It is a shame as they are still our best chance for a medal or a world cup.

The D1 teams discussed a possible move to an 8-team format at Nationals last year, and all of the discussion was about 2 games on the first weekend so that only the teams that make the final have the expense of a second weekend. We never got any communication from USA Rugby on the subject, but I don't know of anyone else who thought the plan was different than that. However, I do absolutely agree that USA Rugby does a poor job of communicating this type of information. They need to finalize and communicate the nationals structure, location, and seeding BEFORE that division starts their season (which means by August for club women) so that these types of issues can be prevented.

This is the fourth USA Rugby championship event I will have been to this year, and it's the same old bull. For 15s NASC, the event coordinator showed up for one day of the event, then dumped her responsibilitie s on a fellow USA Rugby employee WHO WAS AT THE EVENT COMPETING! At 7s club champs, the women were forced to compete on a crappy field that had pot holes the size of NJ filled with gross water that was later saturated with Johnny Cat. At 7s NASC, we had NO trainers present to service 16 all-star teams (appx 175 rugby players), and we didn't even know the game schedule until the morning of competition. USA Rugby needs to seriously re-evaluate their championship series...or at least get someone in there who manage it somewhat effectively. I don't pay my dues to get the shaft!

"Why come home Sat?" all of the teams were made aware of the shift to the 8 team playoff format in early September. They received no communication that would make them think that they were playing both days. In fact many people grumbled because Austin is not a cheap place to fly into and flying to Austin to play only one game seemed odd. So Rosen was basing her choice on the available information-not the old structure. In any case, USA Rugby continues to show disregard for the DI competition.

I agree with Rosen that there has been little to no communication to D1 teams about the championship structure. However, if she was going on last year's 12-team structure, her team would have a bye Sat and play their match on Sun. So at least half of the change fees are her own mistake.
