Really Guys?, it sounds like you're saying a freshman player was out to get your club in trouble, which is a ridiculous claim. Maybe you don't think he was hazed, but I am sure he felt he was forced to do something in some way. And as for AHO being the topic of discussion even though they weren't mentioned in the article, the answer is simple. The first comment was about how they weren't invited to play in the ACI tournament.

I for one am on the AHO team and I can tell you that most of what you guys have heard is just a bunch of rumors. We got suspended because one of the rookies got in trouble for drinking and claimed he had been hazed (which he most certainly wasn't). This wasn't a problem with the way the team manages itself, it was one freshmen screwing us all over. I'm sorry you guys seem to hate us, but we're just out to play rugby and have fun.

cleary AHO is in need of a serious attitude adjustment. This suspension whether deserved or not has been a long time coming. I for one look forward to an AHO free season. Even though they may be good at rugby, they are a classless bunch of hooligans.

I find it odd that some commenters do not consider app (AHO) a legitimate team and even go as far as to say they could not compete when the reality is App has beaten many of these teams in the past and by wide margins. If the AHO squad isn't a force to be reckoned with, why would they be the topic of discussion in the comments without even being mentioned in the article?

I think that the AHO comments here do bring up a bigger issue. What is the venue for DII schools to get to a national playoff in 7's. Like basketball it is a place where some smaller schools could compete. I have yet to see anything from USA rugby officially saying how teams can qualify, (but if it is out there please post where to see it). As far as AHO, I think we should all hold judgement until the school punishes them. As commish of their league last year they were the first to get paperwork in, and they have also been on point in helping with their new conference. Hopefully this most recent event will be a wake up to them to see that they do need to find some guidance from an adult, and start treating rugby like a sport not a club. I have spoken with them, and they agree it is time to maybe move this way. I also agree the ACI had no reason to invite them. It is an ACI event, that simple.

Well, the first reason the ACI will give for not letting App. St. in is that they continue to call themselves "AHO." You want to be taken seriously, then act like a serious team.

Exactly. He knew where the talent was and that team did work this summer... maybe with Amir on the squad UNC wont get slapped around all over TV like they did back in Philly over the summer. Keep pretending that bigger schools have better athletes. ASU's suspension was situation that wasnt an issue when they were originally denied, but the ACI will figure out some other barrier to entry to keep a worthy Aho 7 out of the running next year.

App State? Who cares? They may win a few games especially in the summer on the Sevens circuit but are they legal? One of their players from this summer is at the ACI this weekend playing for UNC! New subject and of more relevance right now - what about Syracuse and Pitt? The ACRL boys will have more important things to discuss than a bunch of drunk rednecks!

AppState consistently beats teams that are being "invited" to play (see Vtech at this year's Cape Fear 7s; NC State every year in 15s, and Clemson and Wake Forest in 2010's 15s playoffs). Aside from being their primary fundraiser, ASU hosts Rucktoberfest in the spirit of what fall rugby should be (respectable teams like ECU and NCSU regularly attend). Additionally, player-coached ASU outplays teams with "adult guidance" every year. True, an official coach would aid in getting some exposure for the kids that could qualify as All Americans, recruiting, or with entry into exclusive tournaments, but hiring a coach is an expense that some teams can't afford. From I know about the school's suspension of the team, it sounds pretty typical of DII college rugby right now in America: let the team operate like a non-profit and raise their own funds however they can/arrange transportation however they can, then only step in to enforce rules that dont apply to frats or varsity teams.
