Ed, I played in the NASC several times and it was an honor to be one of the best 100 players in the USA. This tourney is much needed for selection and interest. With 7 territories instead of 4 the Tourney was not as good though! On the matter of foreign coaches, it is like a french teacher teaching spanish to English kids-half the time you do not understand them! Lets have coaches who understand where their players will come from(eventually I hope)the USA!

Lock 4 - While the coverage IS dissapointing there are 10 games on universal and/or nbc. Assuming you get universal you will get all the Eagles games, the opener, a Canada / All Black game the two semis, the third place and the final. Via internet you can get every match for a total of $149 - so cheaper than the ppv broadcasts. I believe an acceptable package on universal / nbc would have been all the Eagle games; the top match in each pool plus the quarters, semi's, third place and final. The presesentation of the Cup is indeed lacking - yet again.

Well Rugby USA and the carriers of the Rugby World Cup games have just about killed this sport. $29.95 a game for the local market- anyone knows where to get it for free let me know. So let me guess the next set of excuses for Rugby USA "We are developing nation in rugby and it does not happen overnight" "Today's showing was a good example of where we are as we are ready to play at a higher level" (in a 50 point loss and etc. etc. Rugby USA needs to be tossed and replaced by a true rugby association that "listens" to the people that made this sport in this country. I have written them and had my letters published in Rugby Mag for years and yet these arrogant S.O.B.'s running this union have never responded or returned contact to me- Time to hit the road Rugby USA!

NASC was a good tournament but was it held @ the right time of year to truly assess US rugby talent? & are "we" not getting "top" athletes playing rugby? the US talent pool is massive when you compare our population to other top 10 countries, and those same countries field pro soccer, rugby league, cricket, aussie rules, etc, etc "we" grow the game @ the youth level, and "someone" develops a business plan for pro rugby (and not pro 7's, that's a whole diff discussion) and markets it. why has the latter not been attempted? all one needs do is look @ canada. they are ahead of the US in rankings, beat us twice recently, most of their team is domestic based, have far fewer athletes to draw from, etc, etc as the years continue to fly by, i would love to see a pro rugby circuit in the US and see us compete successfully on the world stage...2 days a week practice, no std structured season of play...all leads to no improvement

It would probably help if people could actually watch the RWC. Dont know who's awake at 3:45am, but that's when the final is being televised on NBC on the east coast. The collegiate 7's did a good job of getting people excited. The world cup would be a way to follow that up. Why isn't USA rugby pushing to get these matches seen by regular people?

Rugby actually needs PR if it wants players. Check out this article. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6909937/how-does-oregon-football-keep-winning This concept being that if we can get peoples attention, the talent will follow. Rugby has no tradition in America so lets push the envelope in another direction. (note: not a duck fan. Go Beavs!)

The biggest mistake USA rugby has made is letting Tom Billups go. He was a teacher/coach that understood the american athlete and motivated his players to perform out of their skin. Would have been very interesting to see Coach Billups get the support the previous coaches have received and see where the Eagles would be today. Billups would not have let the Eagles go backwards.

James you might have a point with Johnson but thorbs was more than a caretaker and opened the door for alot of young coaches to be exposed to hi performance and the all blacks staff in particular. That type of open camps and sharing of ideas never happened under bill ups and isn't happening under the great eddie osullivan who has a bunker mentality. I think we will look back at those performances in the last world cup and have a greater appreciation for that team and how they played.

Thorbs was a caretaker and Johnson a quitter who ran at the first opportunity. During his all too brief stay he did his best to ignore the American athlete and made no attempt to hide his it. I don't think either of these two are individuals we would look to as models for coaches or developers of coaches; particularly Johnson.

In my humble opinion this article does not address the core of the failures of the current USA Rugby set-up. Under Thorbs and again with Scott Johnson the structures allowed "access'. Through the "coach shadowing" invites to camp and the support given to the underage programmes, the rugby community at large were given as much exposure as possible to an elite national rugby system. The age grade programmes flourished with many youth players getting high performance experience. Large pools of camp attendees allowed for the best possible selections going forward. Coaches returned to their TU's with a better idea of the calibre of player needed to be successful. This system has been working very well over the past 10 years and proof of that is in the players selected for RWC 2011 who came through that system. That system has been cut drastically over the past two years and once again is becomming exclusive. The future of USA Rugby is in youth and coach development.
