If you are looking to get sponsors, they need to be recognizable team names that can be branded. And Philadelphia vs Columbus instead of Schuylkill River vs 1823 is the way to go IF you want sponsors. If you don't want sponsors, then yea, keep the "20" teams per city and go about having a diluted competition. But if you are trying to take this competition up a level ,then city based teams or rebranding the current top level teams is the ONLY way to go in my opinion. It makes no sense to try an create an elite level of competition and then having the best rugby players in a city spread out amongst the 10 or "20" local clubs. If Schuylkill doesn't want to rebrand itself, they shouldn't be forced to. They can stay with their current brand and can go play in the local tournaments and USAR can create a city based team and pull the best players off of each team to play for the bigger national competition.

they're about 20 rugby teams in the Philadelphia Area alone, and I am assuming the same situation around other major cities. So if you go with a generic city name, won't you lose your rugby "identity" regardless of how marketable you become?

BC - example you don't see the NBA "nationalizing" 3-on-3 hoops even though its hugely popular. taking that example overseas, 15's is a professional sport like major US pro sports. 7's, even as an olympic event, will not be the major money draw that 15's is...so foreign countries may develop 7's b/c of the olympics but 15's will be the bread and butter. on top of that, foreign countries will place 7's second and players will work their 15's season around the 7's. but also ask yourself how many national teams (1) use a 7's national team as a feeder to 15's? and (2) have a conflict between their 7's season and 15's? i'll beat the deadhorse...our US 15's season(s) is broken. trying to force 15's around a 1-2 month 7's season is ridiculous and the olympics (an every 4 yr marketing wonder) is not how to fix US rugby

A national 7s series is something that needs to happen, and probably will once funding can be provided. @davehalo- England has a 2 national 7s series, one for all the Premiership teams and one for invitational sides such as Samurai. There is also the televised Euro GrandPrix of 7s and the Asian 7s Series. Kenya, Scotland, Wales, Portugal, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, England and probably others all have central contracts for 7s players, meaning they have professionalize d 7s. Russia, Brazil, and China are all investing heavily in 7s. It is becoming its own elite sport internationally . Look at the numbers the IRB just released on TV hours. 7s is growing much faster than most realize. The point is the USA is not the only country focusing on 7s, in fact the rest of the World might be inching ahead right now. 7s can be platform used to grow and develop rugby in general due to greater access to funding and competition.

I know most will give this the "thumbs down" vote, but in my opinion, I think if you're going to Nationalize a Sevens "Tournament" or season with 8 to 12 teams and you think you're going to get sponsorships, you should either create city based teams or force those with names like OMBAC, OPSB, Schuylkill River,1823..etc. to drop their names and go by San Diego, Seattle, Philly and Columbus... Companies want to sponsor something they understand and unless you're a rugby enthusiast you wont understand most of those team names. Sorry to say, but they're not marketable.

some simple questions...y r "we" the only country focusing so heavily on 7's? is it cuz of the Olympics? something that happens every 4 years! gimme a break. just ask our phenom track&field athletes how well that works for them. put the focus where it should b... 15's fix the problems with the chaotic 15's seasons b4 trying something new in 7's.

To be realistic you need more than a month and a half of 7's rugby to get better. The only way to get better is play. I say make the season longer its worth it.To get the results your talking about.
