CAN'T play 15's in the spring because of weather. CAN'T play 7's in the fall because of weather. Big Schools CAN'T have Varsity rugby because AD's will never support it. CAN'T CAN'T CAN'T Drop the T and you would be surprised at what you might achieve!

Skeptical, you hit the nail on the head! I'm afraid (as a rugby fan) Davenport and Lindenwood are exceptions to the rule as far as varsity rugby goes. They are both smaller schools with a small football presence (Davenport doesn't have a team and Lindenwood is NAIA). Thinking that what works at these smaller schools will translate to a (insert your favorite) NCAA D1 school here is a pipe dream. The bigger schools are cutting more than they are adding varsity sports.

Pat Read what is being written... A big school is NEVER going to add rugby. Last time I looked NBC et al were not queing up to televise Davenport & Lindenwood. Having these 2 schools battle for a national title is hardly going to grow the sport.

It's not crazy. Davenport and Lindenwood are using rugby to make money. They give small scholarships and pay for everything like kit, refs, travel, and they're still making a considerable amount of money on tuition from athletes. if tuition is $10-$30,000 a year and you give a $2,500 scholarship, the schools are making money. It's the whole model of survival for Lindenwood. They have a varsity table tennis team, just for the purpose of driving up attendance and tuition dollars. No joke. Lindenwood.edu

So, now we are complaining about games being played in November and December, in addition to games in March and April?!?! So apparently we are supposed to cut out rugby for 5-6 months of the year now. I'm sorry, I truly am, but all the teams complaining about bad weather are gonna have to pull up their big-boy pants at some point. This game, which most people are introduced to and taught at the college level, cannot function on a 6 month schedule (let alone how small it will be when you factor in summers and other things). I freely admit I am a west-coaster, but I play rugby regardless of conditions. I've played in snow, rain, mud, dust, high wind, and heat-stroke inducing sun. You can still play rugby, its just a little less comfortable. It may not be ideal for the northeastern teams, but my fear is that my 12 months a year of playable rugby is going to be dwindled down to 6 on account of snow 3,500 miles away.

How to shoot yourself in the foot. A company comes along (USA7s LLC) works hard to promote and organise events on your organisation`s behalf and picks up a partnership with a national TV company to screen the event giving your sport more national exposure than you`ve ever been able to give it. In a fit of jealousy and worry that your organisation is "losing control" you set up a rival event that undermines all that the event management company has been working for on your behalf and also breaks the basic commercial idea of maintaining good links with key operational partners (like large TV networks). USARFU...proudly run by Homer Simpson! (Why couldn`t they work WITH USA7s LLC and NBC rather than against them to deliver more spots open to qualifying)

@JimW: You are absolutely dreaming if you think AD's across the country are eager to pick up an additional sport. Even if it costs just $1, adding a mens sport either means cutting another mens sport (just ask Cal) or also adding a womens sport either rugby or something else. The new "every man for themselves" approach Todd Bell is implementing for the colege game needs a huge infusion of cash to make it work as you describe. If the money is not there now, what is different 9 months from now?

[quote name="JimW"]When this happens is not as important as it actually happening. College Men’s Rugby now has an opportunity to partner with University Athletic Departments for Varsity status. With 7's being an Olympic Sport, being on NBC TV and now having a national championship that also could be televised the ground work is done for teams to achieve varsity status. It only takes 12 or so athletes who would play 3 or 4 tournaments a year. Cost would be minimal and with the small number of male athletes this would be very doable even with title IX constraints. Coaches let’s use this opportunity to build the game rather then focus on why it isn't perfect. /quote] JimW That might work in a school without a big name or no football program. But it will not work at big schools. Most AD's are not looking for new sports unless they want to make a name at a small school.
