to Dave Yeoman: The Spring season arguments are: 1)Cal and BYU can't/won't play in the fall due to facilities conflicts with Women's NCAA soccer (as Coach Sitton elucidated in the podcast) 2)All of the marketing/press relations energy is focused on football in the fall (until basketball starts). Now add to that the attention on Women's fall sports such as soccer and volleyball and there's just not any bandwidth left in the press staff left for rugby. 3)May is a great time weatherwise for a championship series. It's still cool enough in most of the country for playing rugby without heatstroke. Playing the championships in November/December is just inviting snowouts. I'm sure there are other good reasons, if you look for them.

Bruce, pay these naysayers no heed. You made me chuckle when you told it how it is: the RSL may be all screwed up but at least they didn't turn over their administration to the Keystone Kops from Boulder. I, as well, think that this is one of the best podcasts that you folks have done. The problem is that the only bloke that can answer any of the coaches questions is Melville he's "out of the country on holiday". And, if you somehow do actually get him onto the show, he'll shuck and jive like a Louisiana politician. You'll never get a straight answer. I have said on many occasions that the CPD needs to run itself and, until the coaches and administrators man up to the task, they've no one to blame but themselves. Expecting USAR to market the CPD when it can't market the Eagles is just crazy. You can't get there from here. Anyway, good show and keep on trying to get Melville and Bell on the show.

A agree that I don't care about someone's mom in Cape Cod, but when a rugger gives his life in the service of others, I think it should be mentioned. Dimitri was forged by rugby into a leader of men and his sacrifice deserves some recognition. I agree with Rich that we need to exploit the attention that the Olympics brings to rugby. USA Rugby needs to start building a collegiate 7's, and his points about needing to be during the school year and the weather blocking off Jan-Mar means 7's fits neatly in the Apr-May timeframe. Obviously, you can complete the entire CPD in a semester, so moving it to the fall wouldn't be too hard. What are the arguments southern and western schools are using against this concept?

In terms of sports organization the USA is the envy of the rest of the world only when it comes to professional sports leagues. No one does it better or even comes close. And because our pro sports leagues are done so well, we've marginalized international competition in those sports (Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey) to the point where world championships in those sports are practically meaningless. This model of the pro sports league being totally dominant is anathema to the rest of the world, particularly to international/national federations which not surprisingly prefer their overall primacy. The European clubs in a lot of sports, however, are starting to look with envy on the U.S. model and one day we could see those clubs exerting their muscle like the NHL and NBA have. Don't expect those federations to go down without a fight though.

Dave Sitton's comment about the Commissioner of Baseball being responsible for all of baseball was totally incorrect. The commissioner only has responsibility/oversight for Major League Baseball. Going further there is actually a USA Baseball Federation responsible for amateur competition. (Check out wikipedia for the details) It is true that Major League Baseball leaves little league baseball and other amateur elements of baseball pretty much alone. Mostly, however, because they aren't concerned with them very much. One notable exception was the discussion surrounding participation in the Olympic Games, which MLB did consider, but ulimately decided against.
