There have been some good points brought up so far but if some of these tournaments are to get better a few things need to happen: 1)midwest qualifiers should not be scheduled on the same day since this obviously lowers competition levels. 2)control the number of qualifiers and more so who is having them. Some of these tournaments have very little competition and they are considered qualifiers. 3)make certain qualifiers mandatory to draw the competition there. This will increase competition levels and possibly draw more teams to certain venues which in turn may help the hosting team. I have watched 1823 and they are no doubt a good team, however they are still far away from being the powerhouse team Mr. Holmes claims they are. I will agree they are on the right path but maybe he should tone down his comments until he takes the podium.

Vic- I don't think you have anything to explain or justify. Lakefront is the premier 7s event in the Midwest aside from the championship itself. It is a quality venue, and the tournament itself has made clear and visible improvement year in and year out. 1823- I can respect supporting an Ohio tournament being a team located in Ohio. But your 4 losses ring very true(and really, 28-4 is meaningless if you look at your competition- Lions, Youngbloodz, Griffins and Milwaukee would probably not lose any games playing your summer qualifying schedule)and you will have barely a chance at the Midwest championship should you continue to inflate yourselves based on beating inferior competition on a regular basis. Have fun in Ohio in August- cause that is where you will be.

1823 have played have beaten youngbloodz at home , milwaukee twice, griffons twice, cinci 3 times ...everyone in Midwest...only team to lose to was Lions The only times they have lost has been in the Semi to teams that have won the tournament They also played Pacific Barbarians in Fear and only conceded two tries Sure they have played easy tournaments...but if you think Lakefront had better teams they did not...other than the Lions and Youngbloodz...there was no one there... I also agree they need to play tougher tournaments...but they have played and traveled further than probably any team.I suggest you guys watch out.they are preparing well and after Grand Rapid they would of played the top MID WEST teams the most. Holmes is controversial no doubt...but for a team that is only 1 year old ...and the fact his collegiate teams cleaned up...I suggest you focus on yourselves. He has proven in the Mid West to be good at what he does.

this is great stuff... but man..outside of this small niche market of summer sevens...in the midwest... no-one cares about 1823.... 7's has always been about fun in the sun and see you at nationals... good luck..

I don't mind 1823 choosing to play in the Ohio based tournaments and supporting their home state. I know they travel and play in more qualifiers than anyone else (they are a 7's team its all they have to). I know they can't be everywhere all the time, things happen. I don't have a problem with this. I do have a problem with them playing every week, and then when they competition is not up to their level, they trash the tournament and teams who are there. It's not fair to the tournaments or the teams in attendance. 1823 knows who's going to be at a tournament. If they don't like it, skip a few other tournaments save some cash and travel to the bigger tournaments that on their level.

The fact that 1823 B side made it to the semis doesn't mean the competition was weak. We (the Cleveland competitive side) hung with their B side and almost beat them twice. Granted, bragging about almost beating a "B side" is something most people don't take seriously, but let's not act like the 1823 teams were rugby gods amongst mere mortals. There was plenty of talent there. They happened to get the best of all their opponents - no matter by how narrow the margin might have been - on this occasion. Nevertheless, congrats on your victories.
