Agreed - way off base on the NFL training - that is unless you played in the '60's. Get current. The strength and conditioning guys are known as the "get back guys" Sorry bud, no one credible looks to the US pro sports for training models. Players have their own guys, very few if any S & C guys have a big say in the NFL. Probably the most powerless person in the organization. "the principal of specificity" you think you're quoting something profound? give me a break.

I guess their matches that they play against the international sides will serve as good indicators to their training/preparation.... Oh and Barnaby, your statement "no one looks to the US Pro Sports as a fitness model to replicate" merely demonstrates your ignorance to professional sports in the US. Having played in the NFL we not only trained under team supervision, but we also practiced the principle of specificity.

Agreed - they're not training as soldiers. They are under physical duress while they are team building. Do not judge what the US Pros don't do - hell, most of them do not even train under team supervision. No one looks to US Pro sports as a fitness model to replicate. The conditioning strides are made in the colleges, and olympic sports.

Sad - but I have to agree with "Confused". Every year our All Americans - the Cream of The Crop for Rugby in the US - get beat by regular teams in other countries. None of the other professional leagues do (NFL, NBA, MLB) "Navy Seal" training, they focus on specific skill training in the short time they have together. Didnt the US 7s team spend their time "Navy Seal" Training? They didnt do so hot either. Training as a soldier doesnt directly develope a good rugby player.

Clive Woodward stated its importance to his squad winning in 2003. Rugby is a TEAM sport, not all about skills. Especially when you are in a camp like this, skills can only be improved so much in a short time.
The SEAL training is awesome. I felt horrible about myself before that. Beat up, sore, bloodied, but that meant nothing once you were out there. It definitely gave me some perspective, and a more positive outlook on my own training. Glad the younger guys got to experience it.

Sooooo.... What about if we focus more on rugby training (like visiting an international training camp) instead of training them to become soldiers. Maybe our All Americans wouldn't be smacked so hard in the international stage.... jus sayin....
