rugger 78, Don't go all 'Tea Party' on me. I'm just making a point about big money programs vs. small schools will little financial backing and due to this issue, they all can't play in the CPD. I could have used Cal or Utah for an example. The Cadets desire all the support they can get. Heck, I do realize that when their rugby days are over, they go and put their lifes at risk, while us other schlubs go and find a desk job. But you did enhance my point with the $15 mil donation and 6 figure coach. I'm pretty sure schools like Claremont are not in that position.

old school rugby, you are incorrect with what you said about the Academies. It is true that US Taxpayers pay for their healthcare and MILITARY uniforms, but when it comes to the sport, they pay for nothing. The clubs have dues which pay for travel, uniforms, and equipment. Army had a 15 million dollar donor to pay for their stadium and 6 figure coach. Basically, 'us' taxpayers do not pay for these young men to play rugby, it is out of their pocket.

Hugh is right on with his point. First, it's all about money. Sure, it's great to say you play in the CPD, until it starts to suck money out of your own pocket. Only a few schools can or will sponsor travel and varoius other expenses for their rugby teams. Take for example the Armed Forces Academies. They have the luxury of us taxpayers paying their way, their training facilities, uniforms, health care, etc. Schools like Claremont, I bet the players bucked up most of the cash of of their pockets. Just not a level playing field when it comes to funding. So maybe on a year in year out basis, there are 16 CPD schools who can afford to be there. But come playoff time, allow 4 play-in spots for DI schools to compete. The DI schools cannot maintain competition level of CPD year in and year out, but in those years when a team gels, let them compete with the big boys.

I think people are jumping the gun on the criticism here, the original concept for a Premier Division was to have something more in the realm of 16 teams than the 31 who played in it last year. Let's be honest, while the top end of the Pacific had some stellar teams, the bottom end was decidedly ropey.

The American rugby community needs to re-think the entire USA Rugby organization. It looks to me to be a group with no firm commitment to any particular pathway. USAR is a ship without a rudder, steaming away with no particular heading. Making progress but not going anywhere. It's crazy that we have 4 men's club divisions and 4 collegiate men's divisions with voluntary participation at any level. There's no promotion or relegation involved... pick a division and go for it!

Looks like another great idea down the toilet from USA Rugby thanks to lack of planning. You're looking at 25-30% of the league dropping after one year and no one moving up. That has to be a failure. Way to set rugby back another 5 years in the US

Remember all those high minded articles from Brian Lowe (including the odd, quietly removed, use of the word "gay" as an insult) crying about how horrible it was that people on the internet had the temerity to criticize him anonymously? I guess he's cool with anonymity as long as he knows who is saying what.

Let's Play Guess the Coaches "Quoted" in Lowe's Article!! One is obviously Curt Huckaby. Probably a good bet that Jason Horowitz used the P-word. Gary Lane is a likely candidate as well. Fun stuff and great "journalism" by Lowe.
