For those AZ fans/players talking about how big football is on your campus: I played my college rugby at the University of Michigan, home of the largest football stadium in America. We regularly held rugby games on the same date as football games. with just a modicum of planning this can actually help you. We would often match up our schedules so our rugby and football teams would play on the same campus as the football game. Then play the rugby game before or after the football game. It can be done, and has been done on many campuses for over half a century. If you are worried about newbie Freshmen, don't select the to start on the A-Side. Many teams have a developmental B-Side where there are allowances for instruction on-field from the ref/coach.

Lots of complaints about weather: to hot, to cold, snow, ice, rain... I don't think any other sport complains so much about their playing season conditions. Split seasons are bad for so many reasons: 1- you never hit your peak 2- how do you get sponsors (especially if we want to grow the sport) if there is no standard league season. every other sport has a standard season except rugby! 3- the time commitment regardless if it's college or senior league play is huge..there is little down time to actually recovery an enjoy other pursuits 4- etc, etc instead of a fall college season allowing players to move up to senior play in the spring..try a spring college season and a summer/fall senior league season. which begs the question why we americans are so fixated on the every 4th year olympic sports and could care less in between??? 15's is the standard of play by which countries are judged. leave the 7's to the IRB circuit

I think each CPD conference should be able to choose, just as it was with D1 last year. Here in MARFU, we would play all league matches in fall with the championship in the spring, but other D1 leagues had all league matches in the spring, and nobody was complaining. Why not do the same thing? Also, practicing in the spring here in the northeast is near impossible because of weather. All of our practices until a week after spring break were indoors at 10pm to midnight. Since we are STUDENT-athletes, this really puts a strain on school because I could rarely fall asleep before 2 am after the late practices, which left me falling asleep in most of my classes throughout the day.

NBC, the network that has made the biggest commitment to rugby so far, voted on when it wants to see rugby played when it committed to the CPD (May)and the CRC (June). We hope that 7s in the Olympics- which NBC also televises- will boost rugby's growth in the USA. The 2012 London Games (7s will be a demo sport.), are July 27-August 12. The 2016 Rio Games are August 5-21. Get the picture? The 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups will be held in September/October, but if the ratings are respectable and rugby's popularity grows, don't be surprised if NBC pushes for future RWCs to be held in spring/summer. The 1987 and 1995 (Invictus) RWCs were held in May/June, remember. TV has collegiate and pro football, the MLB playoffs and World Series in the fall. Collegiate rugby has no future there. Nor, as has been pointed out, does it want to go up against football and soccer on campus. Spring has... lacrosse. Which the CRC already beats in the ratings. Duh.

Attempting to compete with football seems like a very bad idea to me. Good luck staging a match on campus on a football Saturday. Even if you could rugby would just be a sideshow. Think circus where football is the big top main attraction and rugby is the two headed snake exhibit. No thanks. Our sport is much better than that. Following the money may or may not be the best thing. If following the money triggers a rugby explosion then great. Let's just be careful and not sell our souls to the TV set.

Keep the college rugby season the way it is. 15s up until the end of May and 7s in June/July. October/November could be Fall training followed by a short season of exhibition games, a tournament or a tour. Look at how baseball and lacrosse cope. Maybe agree a start date in the Spring to make it more even between the cold and warm weather climates.

The reasons I am opposed to a fall schedule follow: 1. We are a major football program, there would be no way to get games scheduled on a home game weekend. Trainers don't work for sports clubs on those days, fields are not available due to parking issues, and our players want to go to football games, part of their experience. 2. Many freshman would lose a full year of participation since most do not play in high school. The two weeks or whatever there is of preseason training is not sufficient to train players to take the field and maintain a proper level of safety. A fall friendly season gives players the time to learn how to play safely. 3. The truth is that there is Cal, BYU and the rest in the men's competition. Until other schools develop the infrastructure that these programs have I fear that no team in the men's division will be competitive. At all levels other than men's D1 (now cpd) northern teams have been successful.

No matter the outcome I'm glad to see the Committee putting some time on the question. I've lived on both coasts and see the positives and negatives. Schools that share fields with football (Cal) and soccer (BYU) would be disadvantaged with fall rugby. Snow and freezing rain does disadvantage the Northeast and Midwest in spring. The split season, my opinion, can disadvantage the fall league schools with a lack of continuity leading to playoffs. Cal doesn't play a fall schedule at all, because it beats the players up too much (Cal's opinion). St. Mary's plays a lot of fall rugby and is constantly marred with injuries. A colleague of mine went to U of Oregon and she said they would stop to watch rugby on their way to the football match along with hundreds of others. I'm all for the discussion, as long as its civil.

[quote name="Ridiculous again"]Do you put these articles out just to cause arguements? I don't always agree with Goff but you are as ridiculous as your name. He is reporting on something that several members of USA Rugby want. As paying members the have the right to bring it up to USAR and the rest of it's members. Whether you agree or disagree they have there right and USAR has the obligation to hear from them ax silly or not as it sounds. JT

The way the weather is here early in the year really hampers us getting ready for a spring league and we cannot get access to our home field until after spring break most years. So really a fall league schedule for 15's would appear to suit us. But the fact of the matter is that unless we are able to play every league game on a Friday night (with no JV game) which is impossible for teams to make because of travel distances and missed classes on a Friday. Then it is impossible to get a meaningful league completed in the fall. This a football school, mess with it at your peril. Kids want to be a apart of their schools football team - thats just the way it is. So we'll make it work and try and get facilities to train on despite the snow and ice because the alternative means butting heads with football.
