I think one would be remiss to think that success for USA Rugby will come with the dismissal of LAU's. Given USA's record of success I would hold off in tossing out the LAU.

Competitions like the D1, D2, & D3 playoffs boost participation by providing meaningful, high level matches. Here in Austin both D1 clubs doubled in size after adding lower div playoff teams. Plus many SL playersearn their stripes in lower divisions. Besides, there is no fixed relegation & every year the top D1 sides can trouble the lower tier SL teams. Without relegation & promotion it makes no sense to eliminate lower div playoffs.

The game of rugby in the USA needs to be split into professional, amatuer (social), college and age group as quickly as possible. The college and social divisions do a pretty good job organizing themselves. USA Rugby can still take the lead with the under age development programs. Also, USA Rugby needs to hold the player registration database to keep the clubs in line. The LAUs and TUs are not serving any real purpose at the minute and should be moth-balled. Although, the "charity" status of some organizations makes them an attractive conduit for donation channeling.

Sure. Until those college players want to play select side. Are all these conferences going to fund individual select sides? A 7 team conference is going to have a hard time scraping up gas money for a van ride across town, let alone a weekend in Glendale. And thats assuming USARFU will revamp the mens & womens college all-stars before next spring. the conferences are a great idea, but they are not the panacea everyone seems to think they will be.

Players and clubs are already spending money on rugby camps, tours, and rep sides. This spending should be rationalized under TU leadership to manage rugby camps and rep sides that achieve development goals for players and coaches in each region (One might call this an academy). Current LAU dues should also be given the TU and the TU should manage all competitions in the region. Also, at least half of the CIPP dues should go to the TU. By reallocating the money already being spent, we can improve rugby development in each region.

DII men are moving out too. Rugby Northeast (rugbynortheast .wordpress.com) is already out the door. National championships should definitely be in the picture for D2 college. Athletes train hard to reach the pinnacle of performance that is a nat champ. The old way of thinking is that if a team did train hard, they would be D1. With conferences that will change too.

There's some merit to this, but some people are going a little far when saying things along the lines of "The american public does not recognize LAU/TU's because they are arbitrarily created groups/regions". If that's the case how do they explain Big 10, ACC etc. What is more true in these cases is simply that much of the American public out there is, to be honest, lazy. So in order to attract these viewers we're looking to shoehorn rugby into a format that they are familiar with from Football/Basketball. I fully agree that to help the sport grow we need to make it attractive and understandable to the general public, and then as a result it will be attractive to sponsors. However we should beware of catering purely to the lowest common denominator.

sure, we will just go out back and pluck off some fresh thousands off the money tree to pay for that. Most of the expense at the TU level is to fund select sides that we are mandated by USARFU to supply to the various NASC's. How many of you are the same folks who were screaming for the Northeast's head on a platter when they didnt send a mens sevens side to the NASC a few years back? Read the USARFU bylaws before you trash all TU's and their volunteer officers.
