There already is two USA Senior sides, so the AA allow those younger players coming up to be a 3rd for those who have some potential and need a further shop window to present themselves in . Adding another side owls, falcons etc would cost yet more money, financing that there is currently not available. So at this moment it is the best option. So yes it is utopian adding yet another senior side to the USA pathway system. Not practical and hence it won't happen in the near future. You can argue all you want, it wont change.

AA is an honor that is on paper only. The team that competes (Hawks, Falcons, Owls, or some other bird-type name) should have a different name. In other words rename the team Coach Magleby is coaching to the Jr Eagles. Since college teams barely play 7s, there shouldn't even be a 7s AA team named yet. Down the road, yes.

I'd offer two points: 1. We need to offer a path for college standouts to continue to play the game. 2. We need to give potential national squad players quality international experience as soon as possible. Having the All Americans coordinate with the national team accomplishes both of these goals.

Utopian??????!!!! haha. Please. It is pretty darn simple. Name AAs using selectors and coaching polls. Then USAR can select whoever they want for the USA A team. Or the USA Hawks. or the USA Falcons.

And how would USA rugby fund such an initiative having another pathway outside what is currently there? I am not saying this is the perfect solution, however just saying at this stage in time with the current economical situation, the AA pathway is the best there is. In the future possible revert it back to the notion that you guys are discussing, however now is not that time. Your vision is utopian and nostalgic yet far from practical. I agree with the sendiments of it nonetheless for the future.

You're missing the point. There is nothing wrong with selecting players to a pool like this as a player identification and/or development tool. What we are disagreeing with is bastardizing what it means to be a collegiate All-American.

It's not that you disagree, it's that you don't understand the point. USAR is free to look at the college landscape and select players from it and form a team to play as a development tool. My point is that they should not use the All-American name to do that. All-Americans should be named based on their performance over the course of the season. If USAR wants to then take a bunch of players, AA or not, because they think those players translate best to international rugby then great. Call them the Hawks, Falcons, USA A, etc, but dont call them All-Americans. An All-American selection should be something you EARN because of what you DID, not something you get for what you MIGHT do. Like I said, I know USAR has to identify and develop the next Eagles. But the AA name should not be cheapened to do it. The same thing happens for the high school AAs. It isn't about who is a great player at the high school level. it is about who might be an Eagle.

Identifying future Eagles through such initiatives is exactly the way to help strengthen USA rugby. It is almost the only way of identifying such players. If the Churchill Cup identified anything, it was all players need to be playing week in week out high quality rugby in competitive high profile environments against teams such as NZ universities etc. This is one of them and is a clear player pathway between college and international. It may not be perfect, however it is the best there currently is. USA needs as many quality young players coming through the system against recognised opposition with the best coaching available.
