Dartmouth is trying to build a program. I believe the recent successes with the Dartmouth administration can be attributed to the fact that they are able to give the athletic department a product they understand. Rugby East, the NRU, CPD mean absolutely nothing to administrators. Ivy league and Division 1 are words they understand. The way to build 15s is to adapt to the existing collegiate athletic structure in the USA. Fans and administrators understand a rivalry between Dartmouth and Harvard but not Dartmouth and Army. The CPD has been extremely successful in showcasing high quality close matches, but is that the best way to grow our game? It hasn't worked financially at the club level (Premier League). Plane rides, hotels the expenses add up and without sponsors there its tough to justify the cost to players. Dartmouth isn't leaving because they don't like the competition they are making a good choice for the long run success of their program.

So Dartmouth is the best 7s program in the country and has 4 All-Americans, but cannot compete in the CPD. Something is wrong with this equation. Either Alex is using his position as coach of the All Americans to stack it with some Dartmouth boys, or their club is just not bothered to compete in the elite 15s collegiate competition, or all of college rugby is just a mess.

@kkr - Title IX certainly means that we must promote the hell out of women's rugby too. People can love or hate it, but it is law. Without the women's game, we have no chance.

I totally agree with your idealism. But in the real world you are not going to get to see the AD in most cases and if you push too hard, you will be asked to leave as a volunteer coach. The best thing is to keep pushing in certain areas - fight the battles you can win, and make a tactical withdrawal when you know you can't.

Honestly, teams should focus on winning their local competition/league and not Nat'l Titles. There is too much emphasis on being a National Champion when in truth it's a very flawed system. One that inhibits the game. There should be a state playoff for each division. Maybe a TU playoff and championship but that's about it. I would leave the Nat'l titles up to those clubs that play in the Super League or CPD. The thing Cal, BYU, and other Big Fish need to do is join Super League. In South Africa you have teams like UCT and Stellenbosch fielding multiple sides in the men's club competitions. They don't just play intervarsity matches. It would increase the competition they face. The Cal/BYU/SDSU/ETC 2nd teams could then play in collegiate D1. This would be better for all involved. It would also help with the competitiveness of the game at all levels. You can only learn so much by having Cal beat you 100-0 every year.

Title IX will ensure that varsity rugby (at least for men) will remain exceedingly rare, unless a school doesn't have a football team. Cal will remain an exception, not a model for others.

Jack: Thanks for the sarcasm. I know it's not going to be easy but by improving the quality of the college game (and bringing more players, spectators and sponsors into the game) we eventually may be able to get universities to provide more facilities and funding to rugby teams. The schools that don't have solid coaching, funding for kit and travel, and access to weight rooms and pitches will not be able to compete with the teams that do. We can't just resign ourselves to accept the way things are today. Coaches can't try to get with the AD and give up because he didn't return calls or e-mails. The coaches, board, and players all need to work a plan to sit down with the AD and discuss what can be done to improve. USA Rugby should also be working on this with the coaches, supporting them. We need to put a lot of effort into improving for the future. It's up to us (old boys, coaches, players) to push for improvement. Eventually, varsity rugby will not be unusual.

"the east coast trying to move all rugby to a fall sport." The states is too big to have one structure that fits everybody. If clubs on the east coast want to make rugby a fall sport, then that's their right. They need to do whats best for them. "Spectators and money won't flow to rugby just because of the conference alignment. The quality of college rugby needs to improve" This is absolutely spot on. If you want to improve the quality of the rugby, you need to improve the structure of the competitions. But this can't come from Boulder, people need to figure out whats important in their region. What works in the Northeast wont work in So- Cal. The thing that is killing rugby in America is the obsession of winning National Championships. People only care about Nat'l Titles and not their local competitions and that is wrong. Cut D1, D2 and D3 national titles and watch things get better. If you want to win a Nat'l Title, join the CPD.
