You need 10 years plus to be a competent play maker. How many play makers does the US team have? None right now. 9-13 are instrumental on playing free flowing rugby. Yet, the only position really being produced these days are wings. Yes, they US has one of the best wings in the world playing for Biarittz, but he is useless unless you have players with the ability to put him in space. You talk about football players making these great rugby players but they really do not. They struggle to read the game and their defense is awful. I am not saying that they cant become studs on the rugby field, but that comes with lots of time and experience. Lyle made the 94 team? just fyi, rugby had not gone professional then hence why the canada and US was did not get hammered constantly by tier 1 rugby unions. The US also needs to adapt the canadian system of having all the domestic national team players in the same city so that they can get that extra training every week.

Dave - The 1000 character limit hindered my ability to make my point. I'm not doubting Nate Ebner at all. He IS a great player and a great athlete. Regarding Lyle, my point is that a football player (or other sport) can pick up the game later in life and excell. The list is a lot longer than Dan Lyle and I'm not going to waste everyone's time going through it. Don't fall into the trap that you need 15 years of experience to be able to play this game at a high level. That is the excuse our non-American leaders at USA Rugby keep giving, that we don't have the skills or experience to compete. What I'm saying is if we committed to finding American athletes and playing a style we can all call our own, at least we'd have an identity to rally around. And just to be clear since so many want to jump to conclusions, I fully support all the men and women pulling on the red, white and blue. This is not about them! It's about the same/worse results even as our players improve.

I think Lyle might have spent a summer/fall with Washington before he moved out to SoCal. I think he broke through within a year to be called up to the Fall 94 tour to Ireland.

The USA and Canada need to set-up a Can-Am pro league (The NA4 was a half-hearted attempt.) Getting US players into Europe is not all that easy. The visa issue is big hurdle and not being a "full time" professional rugby player makes it even harder to get a visa to play in Europe. Mike McDonald had issues recently and he has been a pro for donkey's years. BTW....Leinster are European Champs, not Sarries!

At this point in time, whinge and blame do not help US Rugby. RWC is a few months away, and systems in place is all we have to work with, whether we like it or not. A lot of these comments are getting off the track, and I have to wonder if there are many 'true'rugby players who know what they are talking about making them. For one second has anyone thought about those 'domestic' players who were out on that field for 80mins getting absolutely hammered? The key word is 'domestic' they were put in that position, but they just kept going, and if you truly play rugby against a class team you now what it feels like to defend and defend, your energy and fitness level becomes zero, your incapable to inject any forward movement into the game, you just want it to end! Our test team wouldn't even get close to the Saxons that day. It's RWC year they field their best... Our boys play here not O/S they would still feel stink and still getting dumped on! USAvAB's what a result!!!

Picard - ebner is good rugby player. i think he just finished his soph year at OSU as a walk-on. Don't right off his football career yet...he could start in the next 2 years and do big things. Re: Lyle...didn't it take 2-3 years playing SoCal D1 rugby b4 he broke on the scene. Also remember not every top athlete in one sport can transition to another and remain a stud. Lyle was probably an exception

I am sick of coaches coming here and using the same tired thinking w/the Eagles that if us colonials could learn a left-handed pass it would all come together. Why can't we try to develop an American-style, something the Eagles can be known for and we can do nationally? We have 1000s of kids growing up playing football/wrestling/kill-the-carrier. Tackling is what we do. The scrum, kicking, skills I can see, but as a national team we must tackle! How many kids sit the bench at major football programs that would be great rugby athletes? Nate Ebner was one of the best athletes at this weekend's CRC and he's a special teamer (great player, not knocking NE). I talked to EOS late-Winter and asked about the lockout and seeking out football players A)He didn't know what I was talking about B)He thought it would be a waste of time because they couldn't make the transition(Dan Lyle who?) Let's have confidence in ourselves as coaches/players and start developing American rugby.

Professional Opportunities! agreed but you need to look at some of the back lash happening in the home unions, from the use of foreign players. it is becoming harder to play in england even in a non professional level , due to the increasing restrictions on Foreign players. These countries understand the need to develop local talent as well as bring in top level talent for the fans. The competition for those foreign spots is tough. USA needs to increase its depth at home and have an avenue to develop its own. not this old boy network and pull a rabbit out of the hat crap that is going on. The whining about the players not being professional needs to stop and focus on the people who are professionally paid and not held accountable for the crap we have put on the field. Eddie Boy and Nigel would be a great place to start, we pay them like professionals and they give us excuses and its not our fault answers. Can their arses

Redmtnrugger: Seriously? Man, pay attention. There were a lot of deer caught in the headlights moments that just shouldn't happen. Like not grounding the ball in-goal on a received kick? We could have had a scrum center, instead England got a lineout and 30 seconds later, 7 points. Amateur mistake from players that don't know the law.
