...This cannot be compared to American universities, where the standard is just simply lower. UWIC came second in the BUCS championship and toured the US in 2010, beating the U20s in the process. I don’t think that selection of the halfbacks is the issue.

Dear You say that the half backs play 2nd/3rd string at British Universities, in fact the starting outside half and captain in the game against Uruguay is a freshman playing in the 1st XV for Leeds, and the other is in the second XV at Loughborough, regarded as the top rugby university in Britain...

John K, please advise as to which half backs and wingers should be here in place of the current boys? If you were watching the games you would see that the majority of tries were scored by these 3 or 4 players with not great ball from the forward pack.

We are an amauteur country in a professional game. Your right we are amateurs, and we need to play with the nothing to lose spirit. Ive been through this system and its all hype and high performance, its like they are trying to ignore the fact its a small amateur sport and treat it like some big budget NZ side. USA needs to be scrappy and rough before it can be anything else. who knows maybe we will win the games when we stop trying to be other countries when we play and train and just play rugby American style (and yes that means nothing now, but its why we build to make it a style like any others)

So if one journalist, who happens to be female, write an article that you don't think is right, you're going to talk negatively about the women's game? Seriously? Jackie Finlan can take the heat, please don't blame women's rugby cause you didn't like her writing. We're doing the best we can while our coaching staff gets paid a 20th of what the men's staff does, our women get 25% - 50% of what them men get in stipend, and a fraction of what the get in support, kit, etc. The U20s had a much larger staff than any women's national team has ever had. How about just direct your comments to the author, and not the women's rugby community. [Perhaps in the womens game poor execution and committing penalties at the worst possible time is bad luck, but not at international level U20 competitions. Can we get the proper journalist covering these events?

Take a look at these results of unexpected losses for these U20s and the teams they are playing. 1) Russia - Last year, beat Romania, the previous winner and returned most of their squad while our team skipped the tournament(big mistake by USAR) 2) Uruguay - Won this tournament in 2008 and lost narrowly last year to last year's champs Italy, then went on to beat our rival, Canada last year. Wake up fellas, we ignored our youth while these other countries did not and their results are showing through. Unfortunately we're in for more losses in the future until today's grassroots efforts start to produce. You can point the finger at USA Rugby, for waiting so long to support youth rugby, I'd support that but I wouldn't go after the current people involved in these teams, # of staff, etc... All completely irrelevant points.

When's the last time you watched a domestic game and compared it to even a tier 2 pro/semi-pro game? If play reaches multiple phases without an error or penalty its a god sent miracle. This is probably the first time most of these kids would have attacked or defended for more than 45 seconds at a time. Comparing membership numbers is a useless exercise. Look at Samoa's membership numbers, they compete very well. Why? Athletes and years of playing. We have a large # of people playing the support but 99.9% of them couldn't get picked in a mandatory corporate dodgeball game; most begin playing at a later age. The explosion of youth rugby that we're seeing now isn't going to produce results at our national team levels for a loooooong time. Even then without established clubs/colleges that are able to attract and develop top class players with good coaching every day and better domestic competition we're going to struggle.

I appreciate the patriotism in limiting to domestic players only, but the reality is that it is the overseas players who are more exposed to international level rugby on a daily basis and frankly that fully showed in the performances of the players through this tournament. Either we do this properly and start touring against teams of international quality at both college and country level or we need a massive outreach program overseas for players of talent with US grandparentage who have been overlooked by their domestic unions - there are many - to become competitive.
