As far as professional/fulltime, Samoa, Fiji and Kenya may be neither, but they have a frequent and consistent training environment (and fulltime coaches). The USA gets together for a camp for one week before the tournament, then goes to play. No warm up tournaments, nothing. And playing club 7's doesn't' adequately prepare up & coming players to compete on the IRB circuit. If you watch the matches, the errors are ones that come from not playing 7's frequently and not playing together frequently.

From a rational view point we have to look at our development with what talent we have "NOW". That's our baseline and as 7s rugby continues to gain momentum domestically (high school, collegiately & club wise) it's here that we'll find our talent. It takes time to develop rugby 7s players, so lets take the time while we can, to nirture our 7s program(s) nationwide. Funding from USA Rugby and the Olympic Committee now for the national 7s team will go a long way to increase player skill levels by participating in overseas 7s competitions worldwide. We have to compete against upper level international teams and we can only do it by traveling to locations offering the worlds best competition. Let's give Caravelli what he needs to sustain an international competitive program and funds to play in international tournaments (outside the IRB tournament) against the worlds best teams to improve our selected player skills & development at the international level.

Coach Caravelli needs to pick rugby players not football stars or track runners. There's also a difference between track/cross country fitness and rugby fitness. I'll take rugby talent/skills over fitness and gym strength any day of the week. He also wants to develop young players. For what? We need to win now, young guys will learn the game as they get older by growing in their clubs. Just my opinion but something has to change.

Caravelli...needs to step up and take this...the players in the US are fine....problem is the best are not selected cause of crazy fitness tests which really do not apply to sevens....Al focuses on diet , fitness...time to build a team...let the lads have fun , and focus more on picking guys who can pass a ball or trust themselves ...as for his gameplan ...severly lacking ..it has come up weak time and time again

Jus the facts, Desmond Faaiuaso is moms brother. He plays for the Manu Samoa Team. He assured me that none of them are "fulltime" players. Neither is Fiji. U must be related to Caravelli. You should check ur facts before laying your claims.

Time for a new coach. It was a good run but there is only a certain number of times you can listen to a coach without winning and when the performance suffers this badly its time for all to move on. USA Rugby certainly doesn't help things.

I think the Coach is doing a great job compared to others. Full-Time training would make a world of difference, along with stiff competitive week in/week out tourneys. You have to practice how you play. Playing weekly games against sub-par opponents only hurts you more when you face stiff competition. More ppl intersted in rugby = more media coverage = more money in USA 7s = potential full-time training... Just my 2 cents.

Time for a change, you are incorrect Kenya, Samoa and Fiji are all fulltime teams. Kenya have the most experienced side in the 7s world series. Its hard for our boys and team to continue to improve when they don't get increased funding. They have been punching above there weight for the last 2 seasons. They had an up & down season after 4 seasons of straight growth and improvement. I would say stay with our coach, get the team more funding, give them a chance to compete with the top teams and their funding. If not we will be left behind.

If you watch any side, all are terrific athletes with genuine size (2011 Fiji side are massive)with game sense and rugby understanding. This is something that is developed over years of playing and at the top tier level is critical. E.G, Miles Craigwell is simply not a better athlete than anyone on the circuit, and is just a very average player.Even bigger impressive athletes(Leonar d Peters)are not a threat physically. The tackle completion rate is so high, you need more than athletic prowess to unlock defences at this level. Even the smallest of players-e.g Ben Gollings (England), make their hits, Former finds-Dallas Robinson (incredible athletes), just didn’t understand rugby and never will in his mid/ late 20s. There has to be an increased focus on player development not athletic. The balance should be shifted the other way. The answer lies in unearthing rugby players and not and our out athletes that ironically at the top level are not even any better.
