| Mervyn Davies - One of the Greatest |

Certainly one of the greatest No. 8s of the amateur era, and probably the greatest at that position in the history of Welsh rugby, Mervyn Davies died this past week.
Merve the Swerve was special. He was tall and lanky, but powerful and quick. He was a central, and very recognizable figure on several championship Wales teams and victorious British Lions squads. Davies dies of cancer at the age of 65 on March 15. It could well have been much earlier, as Davies was forced to retire early after suffering a brain haemorrhage in March 1976 during a match for Swansea. Captain of Wales when they were at the top of their game, he earned 38 consecutive caps until the brain injury. Few who saw him play will forget him, and he deserves to be remembered among the best.

Former All Blacks captain and New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs has died.
Hobbs had been battling leukaemia since late 2009 and was admitted to Wellington Hospital last week in a critical condition. His family has released a statement saying "it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jock Hobbs this afternoon.
"Our family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support we have received over the last week and in particular, express our gratitude to all the staff at Wellington Hospital that were involved in Jock's care."
The 52-year-old was influential in bringing the 2011 Rugby World Cup to New Zealand in his role as NZRU chairman and was chairman of the organising committee for the tournament.
In 2010 he resigned from the NZRU to focus on his health, but was involved with the tournament, presenting All Blacks Richie McCaw and Mils Muliaina with their caps after playing their 100th Test matches.
Hobbs played 21 Tests for the All Blacks at flanker between 1983 and 1986 and was a stalwart for Canterbury throughout the 1980s.
Hobbs leaves behind his wife Nicky and four children - Michael, Penny, Isabella and Emily.

| The St. Mary's College of California rugby team was recognized during halftime of last Wednesday night's St. Mary's v. Loyola Marymount basketball game.
The Gaels basketball team is nationally ranked and, along with rugby, one of the most successful sports teams at the Moraga, Calif. college. The team was given a rousing ovation and rewarded the crowd by throwing T-shirts to the fans.

Longtime rugby man Dave Sitton, who coaches the University of Arizona and also has been a rugby TV announcer for longer than we care to admit remembering, is now running for Congress. Perhaps the voice of American rugby on television is now looking to take his voice to Washington DC. Sitton is running for the seat being vacated by Gabrielle Giffords in Southern Arizona. Sitton is running as a Republican, and his website is Davesitton.com. You can also follow Dave on Facebook and on Twitter.
