With this weekend’s results, the playoff picture in the College Premier Division is a little clearer.
Rugby East: Navy and Army came out of two weeks of important games 2-0. That puts them two bonus-point wins up against most of their nearest competitors, Delaware and Dartmouth, and seven points over Penn State.
Everyone has three games left, which means there's time for teams to make a comeback. But teams such as Delaware, Dartmouth and Kutztown need help from other teams. Penn State can still catch Army by beating the Cadets April 23.
But it does appear that the Army v. Navy game of April 30 will decide who wins the conference.The loser could be 2nd, but could drop to third or fourth
Mid-South. Texas A&M and Tennessee can technically make the playoffs, but it’s going to be tough. Life has clinched a Quarterfinal spot, but has played one more game than Arkansas State. ASU can clinch first with a win over Notre Dame this coming weekend.
West. Because Arizona State and Utah have only one loss, and BYU has a game left, the Cougars can be caught. But it won’t be easy. Arizona State needs to win all their games, including April 30 against BYU, to have a shot.
And don’t forget Air Force, who have quietly gone 3-1. This coming weekend’s match between Utah and Air Force will eliminate one of those teams from playoff contention. All BYU needs to do to clinch 1st is gain a single point (win, tie, close loss, four tries scored in a game).
Pacific. With their 60-34 defeat of St. Mary’s, Cal has clinched the Pacific 1st place. Second place is down to two teams who face off next week, Central Washington and St. Mary’s. The winner still needs to win out for the rest of the season, but that is eminently doable.
The only complication could be if CWU beats St. Mary’s, but slips up against an improving and 3-2 San Diego State. Then we could see three teams at 5-2. Unlikely, but possible.
