While last weekend was a battle of the Bostonians, it was New York that stepped out this weekend in the women's bracket of the Monmouth 7s. NYRC won the cup for the second of four NRU Qualifiers at Lincroft, NJ this Saturday, taking down the Belles in the finals. In the plate finals, Morris came out successful over Beantown.
In the first game, NYRC faced Morris. They took control for the first half, but Morris contested in the second with a try by rookie Rebecca Fitzpatrick – yet no cigar as NYRC took the match. Meanwhile, the Boston teams duked it out resulting in a win for the Belles.
After an unsuccessful bout against the Boston Belles in their second game, Morris picked up momentum moving the ball better, gaining yardage and supporting teammates at breakdowns to retrieve clean balls. Scores from Michelle Marki, Ashley Belline, and Caitlin Williams all helped to take down Beantown, moving Morris to the semis as third seed.
In the semifinals, Morris saw the Belles for a second time. Despite a try by Miranda Previte to get on the board, the Belles dominated yet again.
In the plate final, Beantown and Morris faced off again, giving Morris yet another chance at a successful rematch. Scoring alternated between teams but eventually Morris turned on the defense and pulled away to secure third place.
Coming into the final, the Boston Belles were hopeful for the win. But New York proved too strong and nabbed the title, putting them in the mix for a berth to nationals in August.
