La Jolla, Calif. - Northern California's 2nd-place HS team, De La Salle, were downed 43-12 Friday by the San Diego Mustangs.
De La Salle had just recently beaten the B side from Xavier, on tour in California, and then traveled south to face the Mustangs.
De La Salle had the size up-front, and the Mustang starting ranks were thinned a bit by local school spring breaks.
Two minutes into the match, De La Salle punted deep to Mustang flyhalf Alec Mills, who passed wide to inside center Chase Pickwell. The Mustangs #12 flipped to HS All-American Billy Maggs and the outside center raced 40 meters for the try. Mills hit the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans pinned the Mustangs against their own tryline for a good eight minutes. But the San Diego goaline defense, led by prop Grant McGahey and lock forward Dean Karam held firm. Finally, Pickwell effected a crunching tackle that turned the ball over and allowed San Diego to clear.
The Mustangs backline then struck again. With numbers on the left side, Maggs dummied and took the ball in from long range. Once again Mills hit the conversion and it was 14-0. One minute later, Pickwell gathered in a kick, took a long run up the middle, and passed to wing Michael Cahill, who went in under the posts for the try. Mills through the uprights, 21-0.
Maggs lit up the pitch twice more with a long run and a kick-and-chase, but both times the Spartan defense shoved him into touch.
With the Mustangs pressing at the end of the half, De La Salle flubbed a kick out of their in-goal and Mills was on it for the try. 28-0.
Mills added a penalty in the second half to make it 31-0 before De La Salle got their first points. Up a man due to a yellow card, the Spartans scored two tries through freshman Keanu Andrade. Tim Jannisse added a conversion. The Mistangs replied with two late tries to finish the game 43-12.
After the match, the De La Salle (9-3-1) captains named Mustang Hooker AJ Talman, and Mills as players of the game, while the Mustangs acknowledged the power and size of the Spartan front row, which dominated the game in tight.
Mills ended with 18 points on the day.
