New Trier Rugby Club fought off strong competition in the 2012 Midwest Youth Rugby Sevens Championship Tournament held in St. Charles on July 14th, winning the title by defeating the South Side Irish Academy 22-10 in the final match.

The champions won their matches decisively throughout the day as it advanced to the championship final, defeating the Downers Grove Renegades (29-12), North Chicago Luther North (52-0) and St Charles Predators (40-7).

New Trier's regular season ended in May, and coaches and players then rolled into training to prepare for three 7s tournaments throughout June and July.

New Trier won the title at the first sevens tournament of the season, the Highland Games in Itasca on June 30th, not losing one fixture during the tournament. Two weeks later the team entered Lakefront 7s in Milwaukee and advanced to the semifinals where it lost to a strong Naperville team.

Eight teams competed in this year’s Midwest Youth Rugby Sevens Championship tournament, but due to its popularity the tournament is expected to be expanded to allow a larger number of teams to compete in 2013.

The roster for New Trier’s Midwest Championship matches consisted of Jimmy Sheridan, Charlie Stimson, Jordan Garrett, Justin Garrett, Jeff Smith, Mike Sorensen, Matt Laskowski, Stephan Balan, Jack Stimson, Joe Talbot and Kyler Sullivan. Coaching the New Trier 7s Team are Leo Sheridan, Thys Wallace and Tim Sheridan. Head Coach of the New Trier Rugby Club is Malcolm Hurcombe.
