Herriman claimed the Utah State Championship Saturday via penalty kicks, after regulation and two five-minute overtime periods ended with them and TYRBE tied 12-12.
TRYBE went first on the kicks from the 22-meter line and missed three of five. Herriman slotted four to take the win.
“That was a major, major battle. That was a great match; two great teams just fighting. It was cool,” TRYBE coach Jeramy Evans said.
“We don’t have goal posts where we practice, so we haven’t practiced kicking all year. Some of those kids, that was the first time they’d kicked all year.
“If we have to lose in the only aspect of the game that we didn’t practice all year, then I’m okay with that, but my kids are crushed. They gave everything they had and they were spent. It was a great game.”
TRYBE finished sixth at USA Rugby’s High School Club Invitational, and United, which Herriman ousted in the semifinals Friday, finished second in USA Rugby’s High School Invitational. Herriman did not receive a bid to USA Rugby’s event.
