Canton Starts Title Defense 1-0
School Age - Boys

Some of you may have heard about the Canton Tigers in our fall issue. Coming off an undefeated Oklahoma state championship campaign, the Tigers kickstarted their new season in dominant fashion Saturday, defeating Oklahoma rival Jenks 33-12.

The Tigers dominated the match from start to finish, only losing one scrum to the Trojans. “We were a very physical team on Saturday,” said Canton coach Rob Davis. “Don’t get me wrong, we played very sloppy against a very good team, so we should be happy we won, but since it was our first match of the year and we have had limited practices, mistakes are to be expected. The good thing is that all of our mistakes are due to inexperience, so they can all be fixed with time.”

Scoring the first Canton try of the season was Dustin Hicks, who touched down after receiving a clever pass from senior Coby Moody. Moody went 4-for-5 on conversions Saturday.

Unlike last year's title team, this year's Canton features players from surrounding rural towns, as well as hometown Tigers. “We don’t have as many Canton guys that want to play this year, so we had two choices; not play or allow guys from other schools to join, so that’s what we did," said Davis. "It’s not only good for us, but it’s great for the game because it spreads rugby to other parts of Western Oklahoma."

Up next for Canton is a scrimmage in Edmond before traveling to Norman for their second league match.
