Americans Overseas: Shifts at the Top
Lots of action and movement for USA players in the Aviva Premiership this weekend. Chris Wyles started for Saracens as they lost 22-13 to London Irish, and that opened the door for Samu Manoa and the Northampton Saints. Manoa scored a try for the Saints as they edged the Exeter Chiefs 17-16 to leapfrog Saracens into 1st place.
Meanwhile Blaine Scully had a strong game for Leicester, setting up a try as the Tigers beat Worcester 23-22 to improve to 7-4-2. Not used were Hayden Smith and Titi Lamositele for Saracens and Cam Dolan for Northampton. Andrew Suniula did not play for Wasps in their one-point loss to Harlequins.
Player availability because of the Six Nations hurt Stade Francais as they dropped a 25-13 decision to Clermont to lose 1st place in the French Top 14. Scott LaValla started at flanker for Stade.
Taku Ngwenya started at wing for Biarritz, which continued to struggle, losing 33-20 to Toulon.
The French Pro D2 teams with Americans did not use their USA players this week.
In the Greene King IPA Championship in England, Eric Fry started at prop for London Scottish as they beat Plymouth 38-27. Robbie Shaw was the victim of the club’s limit on England-qualified players.
With recent signings and more to come, the number of USA players playing pro or semi-pro overseas has increased to 24:
