Strong First Half Puts Leinster Past All Americans
Leinster Academy defeated the USA Collegiate All Americans 29-14 Tuesday in Dublin, finishing the All Americans’ tour at 1-1.
Head Coach Matt Sherman started a slightly different squad than the one that took on Connacht Development three days ago. Ray Forrester and Ryan Roundy were game-time decisions, with Roundy held out and Forrester chosen on the bench.
Cal center Seamus Kelly was named game day captain.
Playing into a strong wind in the first half, the All Americans struggled against a very unified Academy team. After the teams started very tight in the first quarter, Leinster scored 24 points in a 15-minute period – three tries and a penalty between minutes 17 and 32.
The All Americans had a number of excellent scoring opportunities, several instigated by Kelly, but could not finish them off.
Down 24-0, the All Americans made some adjustments and, with the wind, were a little more fortunate. Flanker Cam Dolan scored 11 minutes into the second half, and Joe Cowley’s conversion made it 24-7. Leinster scored moments later, but concerted pressure from the All Americans netted a try from prop Jake Mizell to finish off the scoring.
Along with Kelly, front-rowers Nick Wallace and Mike Shepherd had strong games for the Americans.
