 46 players will compete in a four-day camp beginning Thursday for spots on the All-American traveling squad set to visit Ireland in August. The players will assemble in Houston in conjunction with the Men’s Senior National Team’s final June test match against Italy.With the National Team staff on hand, All American coach Matt Sherman will put the campers through athletic testing on Thursday, two-a-days on Friday and Saturday and a scrimmage on Sunday. Sherman and his staff will then select 26 players to make the trip to Ireland and take on Munster’s and Leinster’s academy sides. This is a much larger camp than usual in the absence of the Inter Territorial Tournament (ITT). "Without the ITTs we haven't been able to see a lot of guys. We've hard a lot of things about them, so this allows us to being in some unknown quantities but guys we've heard a lot about," said Sherman. "The larger numbers also allow us to scrimmage. We'll definitely have to be organized in our approach to manage the numbers and make sure we get value out of all our training sessions, but I think the plus side of that outweighs that, for sure." Sherman put together a large list of players who are unavailable for camp, but just because a players isn't in Houston this weekend doesn't mean he can't or won't be selected for the Ireland tour. "There's a couple of guys that have been in the Eagle side or are very known quantities, who we actually allowed them a pass, because now we have the opportunity to bring in another guy we don't know about," Sherman said.
