The USA U20 men’s team held the second of its two camps this past week, with over 60 players from mostly the eastern half of the USA, with some from overseas.

This followed up on Head Coach Jason Kelly’s earlier west coast camp. The players trained and stayed at Tiger Town in Lakeland, Fla.

“I thought it was a really good camp,” Kelly told RUGBYMag.com. “If you pinned me down I’d say that this camp was maybe a shade more athletic than the first one, but it’s close. We did identify several really good players.”

The group of players was split into two teams, Blue and White, and trained in preparation for a game at the end of camp. That game was an intense, even chippy affair played over three 40-minute periods.

Kelly is still looking for more flyhalves and front-rowers, a state of affairs most USA elite teams deal with. And he is deep in talented back-rowers and centers, also not an uncommon situation.

Among those that impressed were Jarod Stewart, who has played rugby league in the UK, and flanker Chris Maize, who learned his rugby in Hong Kong and was coached by an old teammate of Kelly’s.

The players overall responded well and really embraced the team ethos Kelly is trying to put together.

“I am excited with the players we saw, and it’s a good start, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Nine of the players in camp were returning USA U20s or played for the High School All Americans last year: Nick Barrett, Anitema Solomone, Alex Goff, Andy Sandoval, Vili Kihe Toluta'u, Teli Veamatahau, Joe Whalen and Greg Wood.
