BOULDER, Colo. - The USA Rugby Boy’s High School All Americans (HSAAs) are set to assemble in Tempe, Ariz. for their annual spring assembly from April 21 – 24 at Arizona State University. Over 60 athletes from across the country will attend the camp.
The assembly begins on Friday where players will undergo fitness testing and training sessions at ASU’s Student Rec Facilities. These sessions will be designed to develop skills, and prepare the HSAAs for matches on Saturday and Sunday against nationally ranked Under 19 teams from Tempe and Red Mountain, respectively.
 Head Coach Salty Thompson has cast a wide net in search of the most talented players ahead of this summer’s HSAA tour to South Africa. While the tour is in Thompson’s plain sight, he is also keeping one eye to the future of the program.
“We're looking for the best players in high school now but also building for future HSAA representation,” Thompson said.
“In addition to outstanding seniors, we've invited a significant number of underclassmen who have athletic talent and rugby skills.”
With the help of Aircraft Charter Solutions, the official sponsor of the 2011 High School All-Americans, Thompson is able to work with a large amount of athletes in a short time frame.
Thompson’s goals for the assembly as not only to find the best talent, but provide an excellent instructional experience for all players; challenge all players to significantly improve their performance; and create a high performance culture where players, coaches, and staff contribute and enjoy the experience.
Former age-grade players that have gone on to international and professional rugby are proof that age-grade players and camps all contribute to the senior national team.
“We're building depth. The likes of Scott LaValla, Zack Test, Shawn Pittman, Taylor Mokate and Tai Enosa were in age-grade camps for a number of years before they moved into the senior international ranks.”
Looking ahead to the Summer Tour to South Africa, Thompson and his staff will also be scouting players at regional All-Star Tournaments held across the country to get a look at as many athletes as possible before touring squad selections are made in late June.
“I encourage coaches to promote their players and contact me. The earlier we get to hear about good prospects the better. We understand most of our best athletes will go for college football opportunities, but let’s give them a taste of age-grade international rugby on the way,” Thompson said.
