LONDON -- The USA Rugby High School All-Americans will compete in the Wellington College tournament this week with their first match taking place on April 7, 2012 in Crowthorne, U.K. a town about an hour outside of London. All-Americans Head Coach Salty Thompson has named a young touring squad, giving the Under-17s players a chance to take on some of Europe's best.
Last week the HSAAs entered a sevens team into the HSBC Rosslyn Park Sevens tournament and swept the first day winning five straight games. Day two saw the team fall to Welsh powerhouse Llandovery College, but the skills and athleticism of the HSAAs caught the attention of an international audience, setting the bar high for the fifteens team.
The team will train at Wellington College during the week in preparation for their first match of the tournament on April 7 against Wales Under-16s. Following the Wales match, the team will play England North Under-16s on April 10 and finish off the tournament on April 13 when they play Belgium's Under-17s.
The Wellington tournament is a great chance for the best rugby players in the U.S. to experience an international competition and square off with some of the rising stars in Europe. Gaining match experience and training in a high performance environment is vital not only to the development of the High School All-Americans themselves, but to the future of the senior national teams.
Thompson is committed to the on-field development as much as he is the off-field development of the young men on the team, recognizing that the tournament will be an experience the players will never forget and hopes the athletes will take away great rugby and life lessons from the tournament.
Following the U.K. tour, the All-Americans will assemble in July for a five-day camp and head to South America for a three-week tour where they will play five matches against Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina.
